Many people from all 5 of the elite sects are entering Shaoyang, ready to compete in the Hairpin Tournament.

"My fellow seniors from Xuanyuan Sect, you'll be staying at Tianzi Pavilion," instructs Linglong, as she's responsible for checking people in.

Xuanji, as usual, is asleep in the chair.  She is also supposed to be checking people in, but she's clearly disinterested.

"Pull yourself up!" Linglong snaps.

Xuanji quickly sits up.

"We're representatives of Shaoyang right now.  You can't embarrass father."

Xuanji looks around, hoping their father didn't see her sleeping on the job. "Yes," she says sheepishly.

"Do you really not want to stay here?" asks Linglong.

Xuanji nods.

Linglong rolls her eyes.  "Forget about it.  You can leave.  Otherwise, you won't even know if you caught a cold from the cold wind."

Xuanji smiles.

Linglong hands Xuanji two brown pouches.  "These are dog blood for the sacrifice.  Take them home.  You can do it, right?"

"Yes," Xuanji smiles.

"Open your eyes and look at it," an arrogant young man standing behind Linglong says.  "Even if you don't know me, surely you recognize the sword made by Dianjing Valley." He slaps his hand against the sheath.

Linglong quickly runs up to him. "You can't enter without a plaque."

"Stop fighting," says Xuanji.

"You can talk to me," says Linglong.

The arrogant young man is floored by Linglong's beauty.  However, his limited experience with women is apparent as he tries to impress he by being increasingly obnoxious.  "Who are you?" he asks.

"I'm the Shaoyang Sect Leader's daugther, Chu Linglong. Am I important enough to talk to you?"

The arrogant young man has a bit of a sleazy vibe.

"Linglong," says Chen Minjue, " this Dianjing Valley Sect member insists on entering without a plaque."

"You'll go in only when the elder of your sect confirms your identity," says Linglong.  "Next."

"What if I insist on going in?" asks arrogant young man.

"I'm sorry, you can't enter without a plaque," Linglong says firmly.

"You rude lass. Are you messing with me on purpose?  Fine, look at this." He casts a spell with his hands, and strikes Linglong with it.

However, she's able to block the brunt of it.

"Linglong?" asks Xuanji.

"I'm all right."

The spell was verification of the Arrogant Young Man's identity.  "Now that I've shown you the plaque, can I enter now?"

"Do you think you can brush me off with your trivial martial skill? Any one of our sect members  can beat you up.  Even if you get in, it'll be a waste of your time," Linglong retorts.

He approaches her.  "Do you think you're able to stop me?"

Xuanji blocks him.  "How impolite you are!  Don't come so close to my sister!"

"Xuanji," warns Linglong.

"You said anyone can beat me.  Does it include this lass?  FIne!  I'm curious to know how powerful Shaoyang sect is!" He grabs Xuanji by the wrist, and casts an immobilizing spell on Linglong.

Using his sword in a similar manner to a modern surfboard, he jumps on it, hovering just a bit over it, quickly sailing away in the sky.  Xuanji is dangling off him, holding on for dear life.  He goes as fast as he can, terrifying her. "Pull out your sword."

"Why should I pull out my sword?" asks Xuanji.  "I don't want to fight with you."

"Pull out your sword, or I'll let go of your hand."

"Don't! Don't let go!" Xuanji screams.  "I don't know how to summon a sword. I'll fall down if you let go."

"Are you kidding me? Didn't you brag about yourself?  How dare Shaoyang Sect call itself powerful with a good for nothing like you.  I'll show you what being powerful means."  He flings his arm and drops her, laughing as he's doing so.  Before she can fall too far, he grabs her wrist.  "Are you scared? Cuz if you're scared, cry and call yourself a good for nothing, and I'll let you down."

"I was born without the ability to cry," says Xuanji.  "Have you had enough fun yet?  If so, take me back.  I'm sleepy."

"Fine, since you want to be stubborn with me, let's play a more exciting game." He quickly spins her around in the air, and throws her onto his sword while he darts away.

She falls off the sword, as it's going to fast, and she can't keep her balance. However, she manages to grab the handle and hold on, high in the sky, while it's going at top speed.

Out of spite, Arrogant Young Man pulls the sword from her, and she goes free falling into the trees below.  Before she can hit the rock solid ground, someone catches her.

She sees Sifeng, wearing his partial mask.  He is very flustered, as the Lize Palace sect is a lot like the Catholic Priest situation: its members cannot have intimate contact with women.  She looks up at him curiously, and he anxiously drops her.

He unsuccessfully tries to regain his composure.  Xuanji brushes the dust off of his hanfu.

"What are you d-doing w-woman?" Sifeng stutters.  He quickly moves away from her.

"Your clothes are dirty," Xuanji points out.  "I'll clean them for you." She continues to brush away the debris.

"D-don't touch me," Sifeng is trying not to panic.

"Senior, are you here for the Hairpin Tournament, too?" asks Xuanji.  "I'm a disciple of the Shaoyang Sect.  But I don't know how I ended up here.  Can you take me back?"  She clings to his arm.  "And when I get back, I'll wash this dog blood off for you."

He moves away from her.  He's a 16 year old boy, not allowed to be intimate with women...it makes for a very interesting situation. "N-no need!" he says frantically.

Xuanji stands in front of him.

"W-what do you want?" he asks.

"W-why do y-you talk l-like this?" Xuanji asks.

"Y-You're senseless!" Sifeng snaps.

"Wait a second.  Senior, I really don't know how I ended up here.  And I don't know how to fly.  I can't go back there."

"You can w-walk back then."

"No!" Xuanji falls to her knees and grabs his legs.  "It's too tiring!"  She looks up at him.

He clenches his fist.  "I've never met such a l-lazy cultivator like you."

Xuanji smiles and squeezes his legs together.

With grave reluctance, he gives her a ride on his sword.

"Where did you leave my sister?  Say it!" Linglong yells at Arrogant Young Man.

"I don't know where she fell!" he says.  "She's so stupid that she can't even stand on a sword."

"You are stupid!  You've lost my sister.  How can you talk like this?"

She sees Little Six and Chen Minjue anxiously approaches him. "Have you found Xuanji?" asks Little Six.

"Not yet," replies Chen Minjue.  "We have yet to search that dense forest of Shengyun Valley."

"Its terrain is complicated," says Little Six.  "Sometimes there are demons lurking there.  We're short handed and need more people."

"I'll go tell father now," says Linglong.  "Nothing can happen to her."

"Linglong?"

"Xuanji!" Linglong happily runs to her.  Sifeng is standing right behind Xuanji.  "Are you alright?"

"This kind and powerful Senior saved me," Xuanji gestures to Sifeng.

"Great!" says Linglong. "You must be a Senior from Lize Palace.  You look like a gentleman, unlike that man, who is a bully!"

Arrogant Young Man turns to face her, his face stone cold.

"Thank you, brother," Little Six bows to Sifeng.

Sifeng shows them his plaque.  "I'd like to enter.  M-may I register now?"

Arrogant Young Man grabs his plaque.  "Lize Palace, Yu Sifeng," he reads.  "I'm quite curious.  You disciples of Lize Palace wear masks all the time and don't dare to take them off.  What are you hiding behind them?"

Sifeng grabs his plaque.

"What? Want to fight with me?" asks Arrogant Young Man.  "Bring it on!"

"I'm not interested in it," says Sifeng.  "E-everyone is still waiting to e-enter into Shaoyang Sect."

Arrogant Young Man laughs.  "I see a little stammerer has saved a little idiot.  That's very interesting!"

Nobody laughs.

Arrogant Young Man continues, "I heard the Disciples of Lize Palace rarely meet women.  You carried this little idiot all the way back here.  What did it feel like?"

"Wu Tong, are you looking for trouble again?" Linglong asks the Arrogant Young Man.  "I'll tear your mouth apart!"

"No," says Little Six, trying to stop her.

"Let go of me!" Says Linglong.

"What's going on?" Aunt Hong walks down the stairs.  "What are you all arguing about?"

"Aunt," the two young ladies say at the same time.

Wu Tong bows to Aunt Hong. "Master."

Aunt Hong gives him a look.  She's a woman well over the age of 25, in a mostly male sect.  She's heard it all.

"I accidentally lost my plaque," explains Wu Tong.  "While waiting to enter Shaoyang Sect, I pulled a prank on the Junior sisters.  I'm afraid they're not happy about it."

"What prank? You call that a prank?" Linglong is furious.  "You..."

"Wu Tong, you shouldn't have done so," the Dianjing Valley Sect Leader scolds.  "Apologize to the daughters of Sect Leader Chu."

Wu Tong bows.  "Yes.  I was wrong, Master." He turns to the sisters.  "Junior Sisters, I apologize."

"I didn't ask you to apologize," Linglong crosses her arms indignantly.

"We're all disciples of the five sects," says Aunt Hong.  "We're all brothers and sisters.  I hope you can help each other in the future."

"You're right, Elder Chu," says Dianjing Sect Leader.  "Come with me now!" he says to Wu Tong.

Wu Tong complies, behaving like a model student.  Linglong can't believe what she's seeing.

After they leave, Linglong runs up to Aunt Hong.  "Aunt, how could we let them go just like that? Do you know how he bullied sister? Thanks to Yu Sifeng from Lize Palace, he---" she turns around and notices that Sifeng has left.  "He left?"

Linglong runs up to Xuanji and holds her hands.  "Xuanji, did you know that Yu Sifeng is the most promising disciple in Lize Palace?  But their palace rule is to wear their masks everyday.  We don't know what they look like.  But I bet he's definitely good looking!"

"Good looking?" asks Xuanji.

"Yes," says Linglong.

Little Six snorts derisively.  "I bet he's definitely ugly looking.  Why else would he wear his mask all the time?"

"You're just being jealous!" Linglong retorts.

Aunt Hong smiles and shakes her head.  Kids, she thinks.

Xuanji notices something peculiar on the ground.  She kneels down to pick it up, realizing that it's Sifeng's ID plaque.  She studies it carefully.  "What a coincidence!"

"What?" asks Linglong.

"Look!" says Xuanji.  "Yu Sifeng and I were born in the same year and month, and on the same day."

"It's true!" Linglong gasps.

Yu Sifeng is in his guest room, contemplating the situation he encountered with Xuanji.  He touches his mask, wondering if she would ever see what's underneath.

"Chu Xuanji," her father, Sect Leader Chu, growls. "All you know how to do is sleep and be lazy!  And you don't do what you should do!"

Linglong is standing beside Xuanji, holding her hand, ready to defend.

"You're already 16," Sect Leader Chu continues, "but you can't even summon a sword!  If word gets out, Shaoyang Sect will be shamed!"

On cue, Linglong begins to dramatically and pitifully cry.  "Mother!" she's really turning on the water works.

"Why are you crying?" Sect Leader Chu snaps.

"Mother!" Linglong wails dramatically.  "If you're watching from above, look at how father is scolding Xuanji!  You'll be very upset for sure!"

"You..." Sect Leader Chu points his finger at Linglong, but quickly realizes it's futile.

"Mother said," Linglong sobs, "she just wanted Xuanji to live a safe life.  She didn't expect her to follow the path of a cultivator.  Did you forget about that?  Xuanji is like this because she was born without the six senses.  She didn't ask for it.  Who could understand her pain?"

"It's alright Linglong," says Xuanji.

"Mother!  If you insist on punishing Xuanji, I'll keep crying to Mother!"

Sect Leader Chu gives Linglong an annoyed look.  "Okay, forget it.  Stop crying.  There's a reason why she's dull.  But it can't be an excuse for you to not work hard!  Let's do this.  You have ten days to master the first of the Yaohua sword moves.  If you don't work hard and still can't master it, I'll teach you a lesson." He turns and walks away in a huff.

Xuanji breathes a sigh of relief. "Okay."

Linglong laughs.  "I knew it would work.  Father can't do anything about us whenever I cry to Mother."

"But Linglong, this is indeed useful." Xuanji wipes away Linglong's tears.

"This is the most important weapon," says Linglong.  "It works not only on Father.  If your future lover dotes on you, he can't do anything about you when you cry."

"Is that so?" Xuanji asks incredulously.  "But I don't have this.  I think tears are the most precious thing in the world, aren't they?"

"When you got mad today," says Linglong, "did your eyes feel tingly that you felt like crying?"

"I didn't feel quite angry.  But I thought I didn't need to take them seriously, as long as you're happy.  Instead of taking them seriously, I'd rather go take a nap."

"Then do you..." says Linglong.

Little Six comes walking in before she can finish her sentence.

"Little Six," says Linglong.  "Are you here to send us a birthday cake?"

"I'm the sender," says Little Six, holding a jade green plate with white cakes. "But Master was the one who asked to prepare it."

"This is 8 treasure cake!  And it's made from 8 ingredients," says Linglong.  "It's true that Father is fierce, but he dotes on us.  Let's eat now!" On the cakes, "Longevity" is inscribed in red.

Linglong hands Xuanji a cake.  The three are eating, and while Little Six and Linglong think the cakes are delicious, Xuanji can't taste them.

Xuanji has a sudden realization.  "Today is that Little Stammerer's birthday, too!"

"Sifeng?" asks Linglong.

Xuanji runs over to Sifeng's room by herself with the 8 treasure cake.  She knocks on the door.  "Sifeng!"

Sifeng's roommate, Ruo Yu, slides the doors open.

"Is Sifeng around?" asks Xuanji.  She tries to enter, and Ruo Yu blocks her.

"Sifeng!" Ruo Yu calls.  "Someone is looking for you!"

"Sifeng!" Xuanji jumps up and waves.

Sifeng comes to the door. "Why are you looking for me?"

"Little Stammerer, you forgot your plaque.  I came to return it to you."

"A-anything else?"

"Oh yeah, Little Stammerer--"

"I'm not Little Stammerer."

"Then why do you s-stumble over t-three words?"

"None of your business."

"You can stumble over two words, too."

"Just leave if there's nothing else."

"Here's the thing, Miss," Ruo Yu interjects.  "Sifeng has always stayed in Lize Palace, and he's new to the Central Plains.  He's not so fluent in the Central Plains language.  I hope you don't mind.  I'll leave you two to it."

"I see!" exclaims Xuanji.  "I forgot to introduce myself.  My name is Chu Xuanji.  Thank you for saving me and bringing me back to Shaoyang.  You're the best friend I've made outside of Shaoyang.  Today is your birthday, and it's also mine."

She unwraps the cake.  "Therefore, I've brought you a birthday cake.  We share the same birthday.  Linglong said fate brought us together."

"What f-fate? Stop talking nonsense.  We're not friends, and I never e-eat birthday cakes." He slides the door shut.  Let it be known: He is a 16 year old boy, not allowed to be intimate with women...the awkwardness and abrasiveness is to be expected.

Whatever, thinks Xuanji as she eats another piece of cake.

Sifeng is exploring the grounds, looking for a quiet place.  He happens upon the grove of peach trees.  He's happy to find the morning dew, and a cup appears in his hand.  He summons the drops from the blossoms, letting them drop into his cup.  Once he gets the perfect amount, he begins to brew a tea, falling asleep in the process.

Xuanji is napping in the peach tree behind him.  A silver snake begins to slither up the tree, Xuanji remains napping and unassuming.  As she wakes up, she notices the snake, but falls back asleep.  The snake sees a nest just above Xuanji.  It's ready to jump.  It sliters alongside Xuanji, and Xuanji grabs it by the neck.  "It's wrong to steal and eat bird eggs, got it?"

The snake tries to break free.  Xuanji throws it with so much force that not only does the snake hit the tea kettle, Xuanji falls out of the tree.

Sifeng is awakened by all of the noise. "It's you again."

"It's you, Little Stammerer."

"Why is it...always you?"

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to knock over your tea.  There's a mountain spring.  I'll go fetch you some water.  Wait for me."

"No need!" Sifeng snaps.  "Peach dew...Buddha's Hand...pine nut...They make a triple cleansing drink.  A cup a day helps one's cultivation.  I'm not drinking if it's not peach dew."

"Why are you being so particular?  It's just tea.  Is there any difference?"

"I've never met...s-someone so lazy like you.  And you know nothing.  And y-you're poor at spell casting.  No wonder...you got bullied.  You're useless!"

Xuanji jumps up.  "You!  Although I am pretty useless," she acknowledges, "I didn't mean to knock over your tea just now.  I saw a bad snake that tried to steal bird eggs." The Silver snake slithers along the rock.  "I wanted to catch it, and I accidentally..." the snake makes eye contact with Xuanji and hisses.  "It's that bad snake again!" Xuanji grabs it, squeezing it tightly.

Sifeng is furious.  "Let go!  Let go of it!"

She awkwardly hands it to him.

"This is...my spirit...beast." He's trying to control his emotions.

"I'm sorry.  I didn't mean to squeeze it.  Is it dead?"

Sifeng takes a deep breath. "Tell me.  Why...did you...squeeze it?"

"B-because...it c-came t-to m-me.  I thought...it'd bite me...for sure."

Sifeng's hands are shaking.  "Don't mimic...the way I talk."

"What do we do then?  Should I let my father have a look at it?  He might be able to save it." She reaches over to touch it, and it hisses at her again.

It slides out of Sifeng's hand, and quickly moves through the grass.

"Little Silver Flower!" Sifeng panics.  They chase after the snake together.

"Where are you Little Silver Flower?" Xuanji calls.  "Why is your spirit beast so disobedient?  My father's shows itself at once when we call it."

"It's still young and immature.  Don't talk...bad about it.  I feel it's being...attracted by...something."

"The peach forest is strange, indeed," Xuanji agrees.  The flowers rain down around them.  "We've been looking for Little Silver Flower for so long, but it's still nowhere to be found."

"There...There's something wrong with the peach forest."

A strong force propels them high in the air, wrapped in a pink aura.  Xuanji holds Sifeng tightly, as the force is very, very strong.

"Little Stammerer, do you feel hot?" asks Xuanji.

Sifeng feels very flustered. "I...I don't."

"You don't?"

He lets her go, and she falls on the grass.

"Little Stammerer, we're of the same age.  But why are you so knowledgeable?"

He's trying to get back his composure, as suppressed hormones are going crazy. "Stop talking."

Xuanji covers her mouth.

"This formation...is very difficult." With a flourish of his hand, he summons a golden wand, and writes some words in the air, creating a specialized formation.  He pushes the circular formation forward, moving it everywhere.  When the pink aura finally vanishes, they are on the surface of a lake.

"Little Stammerer, are you alright?"

"This isn't a...Lake Surface.  There's a barrier here."

"Barrier?" asks Xuanji.  She kicks her foot against the lake, and sure enough, no splashing.  "It's really a barrier.  I know why there's a peach formation out there.  This is the secret ground of the Shaoyang sect!  How did we end up here?"

"How do we get in?" asks Sifeng.

"I don't know.  Shaoyang Sect disciples aren't allowed to come near here."

"I need to enter it."

"No way!  This is the forbidden ground of the Shaoyang sect.  Without Father's permission, you can't set foot in it."

Sifeng attempts to open the barrier, but they are hurled onto the deck.

"I'm connected...to my Spirit Beast.  Little Silver Flower has been attracted to it by something.  If I don't save it, it'll be in danger!  Open it!"

"Let's head back and ask for help.  What do you think?"

"We're running...out of time!"

"I...I can do nothing about it," says Xuanji.  "I'm so poor at spell casting.  This is the most ancient barrier set by the most powerful elder in our sect.  There's no way I can open it.  If you don't believe me, just watch." She waves her arm over the lake, and the barrier immediately opens.

"It's...open," says Sifeng.

Xuanji feels her hand.  "How did I open it?" The barrier closes again.

"Open it!"  Sifeng demands.

"No way!  If my father finds out, I'm dead meat."

He grabs her wrist.  "Chu Xuanji! Little Silver Snake...is dying!"

"I..."

He drops her wrist. "We'll come out after saving Little Silver Flower.  Your father won't find out about it."

"He won't?  I'll...okay, you helped me once.  I'll help you this once."  She waves her hand.  A hole forms in the water.

"There's something...powerful in there," says Sifeng.  "Don't come in...no matter...what."

"Okay, hurry up."

Sifeng flies over the lake and jumps into the hole.  He sinks down to the bottom, but the water doesn't affect him.  "Little Silver Flower!" he calls.

A small light is following him.  He continues to call for Little Silver Flower.  Sifeng feels something behind him, and he turns around quickly.  He finds himself face to face with a dragon.  He jumps and spins away while being chased.  He casts another spell with his wand, pushing the formation into the dragon.  The formation does nothing to stop it.

"Little Stammerer!  Little Stammerer!" Xuanji calls from the dock.  She hears him groaning below the surface.  She opens the barrier again, and jumps in the lake.  She finds him at the bottom, fighting the dragon.

"Don't you bully Little Stammerer!"  Xuanji shouts.  "Don't you hit Little Stammerer!  Let go of him!"

"Shut up!" says Sifeng.  "Why did you come in here?"

"I'm here to save you, Little Stammerer."

"Hurry up and leave!" the dragon is pushing back intensely against Sifeng's formation.

The dragon breaks the formation, sending Sifeng to the ground.

"Are you all right, Little Stammerer?"

"This is the Candle Dragon.  It's very powerful.  You can't save me.  Run!"

"Is it powerful?  Let's run together then!"

The dragon throws Sifeng against a rock.

"Little Stammerer!"

Sifeng rolls over, unconscious.  "Little Stammerer, are you alright?" She feels the part of his face that isn't covered by the mask.  "You're bleeding."  She pulls the mask off his face, and tosses it aside. She gazes upon a very attractive man, though with her six senses suppressed, it isn't something she is able to appreciate yet.

He slowly wakes up.

"Little Stammerer.  You're all right.  I'm glad you're okay.  I'm glad you've waken up."  She smiles at him.

He touches his face.  His heart drops.  His mask is off!  He sits up abruptly.  "M-my m-mask.  It's missing!"

"Your face was bleeding just now.  That's why I took your mask off."

"Where's the m-mask?"

"The mask is over there."

As they are about to get it, the dragon returns, striking them with its tail.  They fall on the ground, and Xuanji feels something sharp.  It cuts her hand.  The dragon screams, and drops of blood leave her hand, floating through the water.
