American Perspectives: Fox Demon vs. God Of War Pt. 2 ("Love and Redemption" Ep. 14)

"Don't come close to me!" cries Fox Demon.  "I didn't kill anyone.  I've never killed anyone before."

The blue is radiating intensely from Xuanji's eyes.  She raises her hand, drawing a glittery fire trail of purple and blue.

"I didn't kill your friends!"  Fox Demon insists.  "Don't come near me!  Ting Nu, save me!"

Ting Nu rolls up in his wheelchair.  "Xuanji, stop.  She is telling the truth.  Xuanji!"

Xuanji is deeply into her God of War mode.

"Xuanji!  Xuanji!" yells Ting Nu.

Xuanji raises her arm.

"Xuanji, don't do this!" Sifeng runs up behind her and grabs her arm.  "You'll hurt yourself."

The blue begins to fade from Xuanji's eyes.  "Sifeng, just now she...Just now, she said that she killed you. So, I was furious."  She grabs Sifeng's shoulders.  "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," Sifeng assures her.

Fox Demon is in the fetal position, on the ground, crying.

Xuanji feels horrified and remorseful.  "I...what did I do just now?"

"Just now, you almost hurt this Fox Demon with Samadhi Fire," says Sifeng.

"Samadhi Fire?  But...But I've never learned about Samadhi Fire."

 

Little Silver Flower and Linglong are traipsing throught the foggy forest.  

"Can't you walk faster?  How can you save them if you are so weak?" asks Little Silver Flower.

"What's the point of walking fast?" asks Linglong.

"We should think about where the entrance is," Little Silver Flower fires back.

A strange noise is heard coming from a cave.  Little Silver Flower hides behind a tree, and she gestures to Linglong to stand beside her.  They see a pack of purple and white foxes running from the cave.

"Since she is a 1000 year old Fox Demon," observes Linglong, "these must be her children and grandchildren.  We'll find the entrance if we follow them."

"Of course," agrees Little Silver Flower.  "They are all foxes.  Let's go."  She grabs Linglong's hand, and they run toward the cave.

 

Fox Demon is tied to a pillar.  "Let go of me!  Look.  Your friends are fine.  Not a scratch on them.  Let me go."

"Shut up!" says Little Six.

"Since everyone is fine, please forgive her this time," says Ting Nu.

"You are that merman from four years ago," says Sifeng.

"Yes," Ting Nu smiles.  He bows.  "I am Ting Nu."

The disciples return his bow.

"Oh," says Little Six excitedly.  "It's you!"  He gives Fox Demon the side eye.  "Why are you defending this Fox Demon who harmed others?"

"I didn't harm anyone," Fox Demon insists.

"You didn't?" asks Ruo Yu.  "Why are you pretending to be a goddess, then?"

"None of your business," Fox Demon replies.

"If you don't tell the truth, I'll grill you with the Samadhi Fire," says Xuanji.

"Purple Fox," Ting Nu interjects, "it has already come to this.  Stop being so stubborn.  Explain it to them."

She looks at Ting Nu sullenly.

"She caught those people to feed on their energy," Ting Nu explains.  "But in order not to kill them, she just feeds on them a little bit."

"Really?" asks Xuanji.

Ting Nu nods.

"If it wasn't because I have to save someone, and guard the Dimension Chain under this Mount Gao, I wouldn't suck on others' energy to increase my power.  This is so disgusting," says Fox Demon.

"What is this Dimension Chain?" asks Sifeng.  "And who are you saving?"

"In this world, who else will I wait 1000 years for, and who makes me do everything I can to save him?" asks Fox Demon.

"Could it be that he's your lover?" asks Ruo Yu.

"It has been 1000 years," says Fox Demon.  "That stupid monkey has already been chained for 1000 years.  If it wasn't to save him, I wouldn't be like this now."

"Why are you torturing yourself like this?" asks Ting Nu.  "Wu Zhiqi has never said that he loves you.  This is just a one sided love."

"When did he say that he didn't love me?" Yells Fox Demon.  "Just you watch.  When I save him, he'll have no choice but to repay me with himself."

"What evil did Wu Zhiqi do?" asks Xuanji.  "Why is he chained?"

"You are the one who does evil!" Fox Demon snaps.  "Wu Zhiqi is the freest and easiest man in the world.  He was tricked into becoming the Left Lieutenant of the Demon Clan.  Then he got implicated and was chained by the Dimension Chain."

"The Demon Clan?  Left Lieutenant?" asks Little Six.  "He sounds powerful.  Why can't he break a chain, even after 1000 years?"

"You are just a mortal.  What do you know?" Responds Fox Demon.

 

Fox Demon, Ting Nu, Little Six, Ruo Yu, Sifeng, and Xuanji are underground.  Fox Demon is showing them the Dimension Chain.  "This Dimension Chain is a steel chain made out of the essence from Mount Gao and the other three mountains," Fox Demon explains.  "There are four of them.  They go straight to the bottom of Fenru City, and Wu Zhiqi is chained there.  This is one of them.  These four chains are extremely tough.  Even the sharpest weapon will not be able to break them."

"But, if no one can break it, why do you have to guard it?" asks Ruo Yu.

"Tell us now," says Little Six.

"This Dimension Chain is bound together by a lock. And there are four spirit keys guarded by the major sects in this world.  Seven Star Disc from Dianjing Valley Sect.  Destiny Pearl from Xuanyuan Sect.  Moon Blade from Fuyu Island.  Dragon Seal from Lize Palace.  The four spirit keys are hidden inside four mythological objects of the sects.  If you can gather all four spirit keys, you'll be able to unlock the Dimension Chain, and I can save Wu Zhiqi."

"Spirit Keys?" asks Little Six.  "Ting Nu mentioned spirit keys four years ago, as well.  What are spirit keys?"

Ting Nu looks away.

"All of you are cultivators," says Fox Demon, "but you don't even know about this?  How ignorant.  A few thousand years ago, the heavenly realm gave a mission to the major sects here.  They are to use four mythological objects to guard these spirit keys.  Don't blame me for not warning you about this.  The demons of Tianxu Hall are looking for these keys, as well.  They are not as kind as me.  They are vicious."

"Tianxu Hall?" asks Sifeng.  "It's them again."

"Ting Nu," says Xuanji, "when we saved you four years ago, you were chased by the demons of Tianxu Hall, too.  Right?"

"They chased after me to find out how to unlock the Dimension Chain," says Ting Nu, "and I had no choice but to tell them about the locations of the spirit keys."

"Are the demons of Tianxu Hall looking for the spirit keys to save Wu Zhiqi?" asks Xuanji.

"They are not that kind," says Fox Demon.  "They want to save Wu Zhiqi because they want to ask for his help to wake the Devil Star."

"What is the Devil Star?" asks Little Six.  "Why is this the first time I've heard about any of these?"

"Ignorant humans," scoffs Fox Demon.  "You know nothing.  All of you are so narrow minded.  You won't understand."

"Devil Star was the strongest fighter of the Asuras from the Demon Realm," explains Ting Nu.  "He has the power to destroy the world.  A few thousand years ago, the King of the Asuras sent the Devil Star as a general to wage war against the Heavenly Realm.  In the end, the Devil Star was killed by the God of War.  And that was the fall of the Demon Realm.  No matter how powerful Devil Star is, he has already been defeated.  Right?  But what's so scary about it?  But there's a rumor saying that the Devil Star cannot be destroyed.  So, it was just sealed by the God of War.  And that his spirit has been reborn after going through the Path of Reincarnation.  The Demon Clans who still hold a grudge built the Tianxu Hall.  They want to break the seal to wake the Devil Star.  They'll cause chaos in the world."

"If that's the case, it's bad," says Sifeng.  "Other major sects still think that Tianxu Hall is made up of a bunch of lowly demons.  I never thought that they were so powerful."

"If that's the case," says Xuanji, "I have to go back and tell my father about it."

"You just want to do it now?"  asks Fox Demon.  "The demons of Tianxu Hall have already infiltrated all the major sects, and you just realized it now.  Don't you think that it's too late?"

"What did you say?" asks Little Six.

Fox Demon takes a good look at him.  "Tianxu Hall has been running amuck for a long time.  Do you think that catching me is a huge achievement?  What is it?  Are you going to bring me back to get compliments from your father?"

"I..." says Xuanji.

"Cut the nonsense," says Little Six.  "Don't think that you are innocent just because you told us about Tianxu Hall."

"You said that you didn't hurt anyone," says Ruo Yu.  "Where are you keeping those whom you caught from Zhongli City?"

Fox Demon gasps.  "Those people are living very well in the background of Tianji Pavilion.  If you don't believe me, I'll show you."

Ruo Yu and Sifeng exchange glances.

 

Little Silver Flower and Linglong are finally able to make it into the Fox Demon's palace.

Linglong grabs Little Silver Flower's arm as they walk the hallway.  "Slow down."

They turn a corner, and they reach the shrine with Fox Demon's portrait.  They look at it curiously and keep walking.  Lo and behold!  They come upon it again.  What the hell?  Yet, they keep going.

"Let's go," says Little Silver Flower.  "Oh, my goodness."

They round the corner, and there it is again!  The girls decide to walk up to the shrine.

"Weren't we here just now?" Linglong asks.  "Why are we back at the same place?"

"I told you to turn right just now," Little Silver Flower snaps, "but you wouldn't listen."

"We are back because I listened to you by turning right!"

"We are because because I listened to you!"

"You..." says Linglong.

They look at the shrine in frustration.

Little Silver Flower moves closer to the portrait.  "This Goddess Gao is really cunning."  She reaches for the portrait, and a dark blue vortex appears.  Little Silver Flower lets out a yelp, and is getting sucked in.

"Yan Ran!"  Linglong immediately grabs her leg and pulls.

Little Silver Flower is mesmerized by the purple, pink, and blue galaxy inside the vortex.  She is reaching for something.

Linglong is finally able to pull her out, and the force knocks them on their backs on the hard, stone floor.

"You are no help at all," says Linglong.  "Why did you activate the trap?  I had to use so much energy to save you."

Little Silver Flower rolls her eyes.

"So painful," Linglong continues.

"Why did you save me?  I could have...Forget it.  I don't want to fight.  Let's find a way out first."

The two help each other up.

"This drawing must be a drawing of that demon, Goddess Gao," says Linglong.

Little Silver Flower nods.

"She depicts herself like a deity.  So narcissistic," Linglong continues.

"We are more beautiful, right?" asks Little Silver Flower.

Linglong points to the ground.  "Look.  The suction was so strong just now, but this rush cushion didn't move at all."

Little Silver Flower kicks the platform the cushion is on. "Ow!"  She cries.  "Could it be that this is the mechanism?"

Linglong is trying her hardest not to laugh.

"Goddess Gao is so naricissistic, and there's a solid rush cushion here.  Maybe someone needs to kneel before her," says Linglong.

"Kneel before her?  asks Little Silver Flower.

Linglong nods.

"How about you kneel before her, then?" suggests Little Silver Flower.

"Why can't you kneel?" asks Linglong.  "You do it."

"I..."

Linglong shoves Little Silver Flower to her knees.  The portrait turns turquoise, blue, and purple.  The girls smile, and Little Silver Flower stands up.

"I knew it!" says Linglong.  She rushes toward the portrait.

"What is this?" asks Little Silver Flower.

A large chunk of the Mirror of Origin is illuminated by the turqouise aura.

"Mirror," reads Linglong.  "Origin..."

"Ah!"  Little Silver Flower gasps.  "Mirror of Origin!"

"This is the mirror that Xuanji is looking for?"  Linglong smiles brightly.  "It must be it.  After I bring it back, Xuanji will be able to recover all of her six senses!"  She reaches in to grab it, but it won't move.  "Why can't I take it?"

Little Silver Flower pushes her hands away.  "Forget it.  We won't be able to take it.  Let's look for Sifeng first.  I don't know if he's in danger or not."

"Fine," says Linglong.  "We'll save them first, and then come back for the mirror."

Little Silver Flower nods in agreement.

 

The four disciples, Fox Demon, and Ting Nu are walking into the backyard of Tianji Pavilion.  Across the pond, they see several young men in white hanfus practicing with wooden swords.

"The cave of a monster is like this?" asks Little Six.  "Shouldn't it be filled with blood and skeletons?"

"You read too much fiction," says Fox Demon.  "Will you be able to stay in that kind of place?"

"Goddess Gao is here!" one of the men says cheerfully.

"There she is!"

"Goddess Gao is here!"

"Hurry up!  Goddess Gao is here!"

The men come rushing down the trail.

Fox Demon smiles.

"Goddess Gao!"

"Goddess Gao!"

"Goddess Gao!"

"You are here!" The horde of men run up to the group.

"All of you are from Zhongli City," says Xuanji.  "Nobody is holding you hostage now.  Go home."

"Why should we leave?" one of the men asks.  "We were chosen by Goddess Gao.  We are blessed."

Fox Demon smiles.

"That's right," the other men agree.

"We are so happy to listen while she teaches us about cultivation everyday."

"That's right."

"Look," says Fox Demon.  "I didn't force them to stay."

"Since they look upon you as a deity," says Sifeng, "why don't you ask them to go back?"

She looks at her group of young men.  She reluctantly approaches them.  "Listen to me.  I've completed my cultivation now.  I have to go back to the Heavenly Realm.  You can go back now.  If we are fated to meet, I'll summon you back here again."

The men bow to her.  "Take care of yourself, Goddess Gao."

She returns their bow.  She is sad to watch them leave.  "I've already released them," she says to Sifeng.  "Shouldn't you release me, too?  Let me tell you.  I have to gather the spirit keys before Tianxu Hall can.  I have to save Wu Zhiqi so that they won't be able to use him.  And then those sects of yours will be safe, too."

"Why should we believe you?" asks Little Six.  "How can Wu Zhiqi wake that Devil Star who is sealed by a God of War?  I think you are just boasting about it."

"I already told you everything I know," Fox Demon insists.  "I have nothing else to say if you don't believe me."  She crosses her arms.  "I just know that mortals like you are not a match for Tianxu Hall at all."

"If you want to save him," says Sifeng, "why did you catch Elder Ling Shi?  What do you want?"

"None of your business," says Fox Demon.

"For the spirit key, right?" asks Sifeng.

"Goddess Gao!" says one of her disciples.  Two of her disciples have caught Ling Shi trying to run away, and they are dragging him to her.  "Goddess Gao, he tried to escape."

"You can go back first," says Fox Demon.

"Okay," the two men bow to her.

"Don't try to escape," Little Six says to Ling Shi.  "We'll bring you back to Xuanyuan now to be punished."

Fox Demon spins around.  "No.  You can take everyone else away.  But not Elder Ling Shi.  I caught him because I want to know the location of Xuanyuan's spirit key."

"You demons," says Ling Shi.  "I won't let you get the spirit key."

Fox Demon turns to face him.

Ling Shi points at Xuanji.  "Destiny Pearl?  Why is the Destiny Pearl with you?"

Two beads on her bracelet begin to glow.

"I think Sect Leader Zhu Shi slipped it on when he asked us to bring a birthday present to to the Madam of Fuyu Island," says Xuanji.

Ling Shi looks at them and laughs.  "How fortunate."

Xuanji covers her arm with her transparent Daxiushan sleeve.

"How fortunate it didn't fall into the hands of demons," Ling Shi continues.  "But it's too bad that Xuanyuan Sect is probably doomed now."

"What happened to Xuanyuan Sect?" Little Six asks anxiously.

Ling Shi takes a deep breath and stretches his arms out.  "We brought this upon ourselves.  We brought this upon ourselves!"  He laughs bitterly.  "I was greedy for power, and wanted to restore the reputation of Xuanyuan Sect.  So I fell into the trap of Tianxu Hall."

Fox Demon crosses her arms.

"Kunyin Pill is a fatal poison," Ling Shi continues.  "As soon as you stop taking it, you'll be poisoned to death."

"Tianxu Hall wanted to use this way to threaten Xuanyuan Sect to get the spirit key?" asks Ruo Yu.

"When we wouldn't do that, they forced us with the pill," says Ling Shi.  "They gave us a deadline.  So I could only do my research about Kunyin Pill in secret."

"You controlled the Demon Spirit to collect the Bloody Jialuo Fruit," Little Six points out, "in order to make the pill?"

"I already know that I can use Zhuyu Grass and Bloody Jialuo Fruit to make this Kunyin Pill," says Ling Shi.  "But I don't know why I failed every time, although I was so close."

"Aren't you ashamed to ask that after killing so many innocents?" asks Little Six.

"As long as I can save my sect, what's wrong with killing some people?"

"But if you do that," says Xuanji, "how are you different from a demon?"

"You..." says Ling Shi.

"You've failed as a cultivator," Xuanji continues.

"You!" Ling Shi spits blood and falls to his knees.  "Are Shaoyang Sect and Lize Palace feeling so proud of themselves now?  Tianxu Hall will not give up."  He points at them.  "It'll be you next.  You'll be next!"  He begins to feel more chest pain.

"What should we do now?" asks Little Six.

"Let's go to Fuyu Island," says Sifeng.  "It's Fuyu Island Madam's birthday.  Every sect will go there.  We can inform them to send help to Xuanyuan Sect.  But I'm not sure if we can make it or not."
