I have grown rather fond of Yan Se, the Talisman Expert. There's a lot about him that I find very likeable. I like that he is older, yet still able to do some really awesome martial arts; instead of being cranky, incoherent, and feeble. Or evil. Yikes! Because I am a 41 year old American woman, there's a huge stigma around being older, and the belief that you're disposable and weak around the age of 50, give or take. Especially if you're a woman. When I watch both 사극 and Xianxia dramas, I don't feel ashamed or angry about being older. Actually, I feel happy.
I find Yan Se enjoyable to watch because he's still handsome, wears awesome clothes, has a great hairstyle, is smart, compassionate, and a bit of a father figure to Ning Que and Sang Sang. When Ning Que was kidnapped, it was Yan Se and Sang Sang who immediately rushed to save him, no ifs, ands, or buts.
Yan Se is perfectly imperfect. In spite of his well esteemed and spiritually important position, he is not annoyingly pure. The irony in this show is that the ones who pride themselves on being pure are actually quite genocidal. I wonder if this is not only a jab at the historic hierarchy that existed during that time period, but also a jab at the Psuedo Utopia that we aspire to have in the United States? Something to make one think, for sure. He has a very playful sense of humor. He's in touch with his sexuality, but most certainly not in a creepy Hugh Hefner sort of way. He's more playful in that regard, as well, and it's the women he sees who are the ones in control. He also likes to get a little extra cash when he can, but again, it's not in a creepy way. It's a bit more fun, playful, and comedic.
Lastly, I enjoyed how determined he was to have Ning Que as a student, even if he initially made an ass out of himself in the process. He did not want Ning Que exclusively training under Fu Zi, and he was pulling out all the stops with total disregard. However, when Fu Zi made it known they could both train him, Yan Se's enthusiasm was most certainly infectious.
Yan Se is definitely one of my all time favorite older male characters because he shows that you can still be fun, caring, compassionate, protective; and that age is seriously nothing but a number.
