Now, it's really starting to get interesting! We've gotten past the necessary and tedious evils of laying out the groundwork, and now we're getting to the real story. Not that the groundwork wasn't the real story, but the more episodes a drama has, the more tedious and slow the laying of the groundwork is going to be. That's just the way it is. I'm not crazy about the first few episodes of just about any show that's more than 12 episodes long because it's going to be awhile until they get to point. The irony of me writing out this long, drawn out explanation is most certainly not lost on me, ha ha!
One of my favorite parts within these two episodes is when Chu Qiao defends herself and her sisters against the mean girls. It reminds me of 기황후 when 기승냥 did the same. The martial arts choreography for the mean girls scene was definitely more stylized.
At first, I was angry when Yuwen Yue punished Chu Qiao for defending herself, especially when it was done in front of all those mean girls. Then I realized it was to cover up for the training he wanted her to complete.
The training scene involved her handling the challenge of having multiple arrows being shot at her automatically, quickly, and simultaneously. She had to master the art of avoiding them, in addition to stopping the sources that were shooting them. Yuwen Yue's harsh criticism of her progress reminds me of the harsh criticisms of my Kendo Sensei.
Even though Yuwen Yue is trying to help her, I still think he's a jerk, and I definitely have 2nd lead syndrome for Yan Xun. I think Yan Xun is hilarious, and he has great hair. Sorry, that's the truth! And I love those multiple braids. Especially when he has ornaments on them.
The icing on the cake was when Chu Qiao was promoted to silver bell status, and took over Jin Zhu's room. Sweet revenge on the primary mean girl. Well deserved. To that, I say: "Ha! Ha!" Of course, this isn't done without some sort of catch, which is why I still think Yuwen Yue is a jerk. It's done to challenge Chu Qiao by fanning the flames of envy from her peers, and getting their harassment of her to escalate. Truthfully, like 기황후 has shown us, he really didn't need to do anything. They would have harassed her anyway.
It definitely keeps things interesting, and I love how she's able to crush all of it head on. I just think stirring it up is a real dick move on Yuwen Yue's part. I would like him better if he had been more like 탈탈 and told her what to expect.
What I like about Chu Qiao in these episodes is that she has a lot of class. Some great quotes demonstrating her classy behavior in response to these aggressive acts include: "When there's a lot of women, gossip follows closely." "Making things easier for others makes things easier for yourselves." Or her snappy comeback to Jin Zhu: "Rules need to be taught by those who understand them." Zing!
What I liked about these episodes is seeing her stand up to the constant bullying. I liked how she didn't let Yuwen Yue's patronizing comments get her down, and how she really didn't react to them at all. I would go as far to say she ignored most of them and stayed on task. She would consistently prove him wrong, even though he would act unimpressed. I like how Yan Xun appreciated Chu Qiao's assertive nature and doesn't want it to change. I also appreciate Yan Xun's humor, which balances out Yuwen Yue's grumpy and uptight nature.
I am definitely seeing a lot of great fan art opportunities with this show. As I've said before, I love the strong and war like female leads. I do not like female leads who have long, validation seeking soliloquies of insecurity among a sappy sisterhood of friends, which is a key theme in women oriented American television. Yikes! I like someone like Chu Qiao or 기승냥 who don't give a crap about validation and are simply interested in getting the job done.
