First of all, I must say the martial arts choreography is awesome! It's really fun to watch. Second, I love Yan Xun's hairstyle. Set decoration is lovely, especially in Yuwen Yue's bed chamber.
I am very Yan Xun biased, so there will be a lot of pictures of him in this article, but not necessarily from Episodes 2-4. I'm not really into Yuwen Yue, but I'm getting the feeling that he's going to be the main love interest. The fact that he killed Chu Qiao's brother right in front of her doesn't really sit well with me, but hopefully, the writers have found a clever way to untangle that.
I'm also enjoying the intro song, which I found out is sung by Zhao Liying herself! Right on!
So, in Episodes 2-4, the ground work is still being laid out in terms of what to expect in the future, which characters we're supposed to like, which characters we aren't supposed to like, and who may potentially have a redemption arc. Family members of Chu Qiao are getting killed, which is laying out her motivation to go from lowly slave girl to someone working in the bed chamber of one of the culprits (Yuwen Yue). Because her brother was killed by Yuwen Yue, I'm really not rooting for him, however, I'm pretty sure he's going to have some sort of redemption arc. I'm just interested in what kind of justification is going to be used.
Chu Qiao does kill Madam Song, the lady in charge of the lower ranked female slaves, which I think was well deserved.
In Episode 4, Chu Qiao proves her worth by passing the necessary tests in order to be Yuwen Yue's bed chamber maid, therefore laying the ground work for easily accessible revenge. She is at an extreme disadvantage during the selection process, since she does not know how to read or play chess, but she's able to use her intelligence and figure it out very quickly.
Since these are the episodes where the ground work is being laid out, and we're figuring out which characters to align with, I don't really have too much to say about these episodes. I usually don't have much to say about the "ground work" episodes, as it's a bunch of development, and I'm kind of getting it all figured out. I'm just waiting for them to get to the exciting parts that I'm seeing in the intro credits!
