"기황후" can be viewed on Viki or Youtube, as well as many other channels.  It is an amazing classic 사극, and this author is aware that it's not historically accurate.  The real life Empress Ki had a very contentious relationship with the Goryeo Dynasty.  And many liberties were most certainly taken with the fictionalized version of historical characters. Dialogue adapted from English Subtitle translations by the "Imperial Team at Viki.com"

Seung Nyang and her band of merry men have been nabbed by Wang Yoo and his supporters.  Her Robin Hood aspirations have momentarily stalled.

Wang Yoo approaches Seung Nyang, and his disappointment is evident.  "I still had hoped you, ruffian that you are, would be different.   But to just be a dog of of King Simyang's, you dared to approach me?  Where is the place you arranged to meet the Yuan merchants?"

"Why are you treating us this way when we are salt thieves?"  Seung Nyang's assistant asks.  "You stole our salt.  Isn't that enough?"

"Who are you calling a salt thief?"  Jeom Bak defensively inquires.  "This person is...an officer from the Office of Auditing."

Wang Yoo points his sword at Seung Nyang's throat.  "If you answer my question, you shall be spared.  But if you do not, your head will immediately be decapitated."

"Kill me, then," Seung Nyang says matter-of-factly.

"What?"  Wang Yoo asks incredulously.

"You said I'd be spared if I answer?  Did you think I'd believe you?  Kill me.  Hurry up and kill me!"

"Do you think I wouldn't be able to kill you if you ask for it?"  Wang Yoo asks.

"Spare him!"  Seung Nyang's assistant yells.  "Our leader has done no wrong.  He smuggles salt because of us."

"With the money we receive from salt deliveries," says one of Seung Nyang's men, "we redeem our sisters who were sold off to Yuan."

"So, please," says the assistant, "do not kill our leader."

Wang Yoo is amazed and astounded, and he now understands where Seung Nyang's animosity is coming from.

Seung Nyang closes her eyes.

Wang Yoo lowers his sword.  "Hang this ruffian outside and do not grant him even a sip of water."

"Yes," a man in blue, standing behind Seung Nyang, bows.

Wang Go and Jo Cham arrive at the Governor's home unannounced, late at night.  The governor bows.  "Please come in, Your Royal Highness."

Wang Go takes a seat at the Governor's desk.  "What happened that Seung Nyang got caught?"

The governor and Jo Cham are kneeling in front of Wang Go.

"The Crown Prince knows our plans as if they were on the palm of his own hand!"  The astounded governor says.

Wang Go slaps the desk.

"The only ones who know the location of the exchange are just me and Seung Nyang," Governor continues. "It has been revealed that the traitor is Seung Nyang."

Wang Go shakes his head.  "No, that can't be true.  He grew up under my knee.  If I tell him to die, he would at least play dead."

"Then," says Governor, "if not him, who exactly would it be?"

"Whether Seung Nyang has betrayed me or not will be confirmed if it is tested."

"A test?"  Jo Cham asks.

Seung Nyang is hanging by her arms between to wooden posts.  She is passed out from the dehydration, and from being in an unnatural position all day.  She briefly wakes up, and her black headband falls down, revealing Wang Yoo's blue headband.

A man steps in front of her, and picks the black headband off the ground.  The man in question is Jeom Bak.

This guy is a spy for King Simyang?  However, that doesn't seem to add up.

"Look at your appearance," says Jeom Bak.  "Since you're going to give up the secrets, don't waste both our energy and easily tell them."  He puts the black headband back over Wang Yoo's.  "If you die like this, won't your death be worth no more than a dogged one?"

He's not the spy.

"Ah...this brat is totally stubborn!  Aren't you?" Jeom Bak asks.  He grabs her jeogori.  He puts his fist in her face.  "I can't beat him to death, either!"

Seung Nyang passes out, and Jeom Bak withdraws.  After he leaves, another man stands behind her.

"King Simyang is--"

Seung Nyang raises her head.  She's now wide awake.

"Worrying about you," the man continues.

Seung Nyang looks side to side.  He's the spy.

He hands her a small knife from behind her.  "Eliminate him.  It is the command of King Simyang."

The man backs away, and Seung Nyang does not get a glimpse of his face.

Wang Yoo is sadly sitting at the firepit, drinking some tea.

"Come."  Jeom Bak and the man in blue bring a tied up Seung Nyang to Wang Yoo, Moo Song, and Eunuch Bang.  Jeom Bak and the man in blue push her to the ground in front of Wang Yoo.

"Everyone, leave," says Wang Yoo.  After they leave, he asks Seung Nyang, "Would you like some tea?"

She doesn't answer, but he pours her a cup anyway.

"It has cooled sufficiently," says Wang Yoo.  "Have a sip."

She looks at him hatefully.  "Keep it."

"For someone who has said you'd reclaim your sisters sold off to Yuan, you're helping King Simyang, the source of the tributary girl problem?"

While he's talking, Seung Nyang is secretly slicing away at the rope binding her wrists behind her back.

"I received the command of the crown prince to reveal the wrongs of these officials leaning on Yuan," Wang Yoo continues.  "If you tell me the location of the exchange, even now, I will not ask you all for a reckoning of your crimes."

Seung Nyang manages to free herself from the wrist bindings.

"Now, how is..."

Seung Nyang shrugs the rope off her body, and holds the small knife to Wang Yoo's throat.  She covers his mouth.  "Shh..." She whispers.  She lifts up her black headband to reveal his blue headband.

His eyes widen with the realization that she was the secret messenger and the spy.

She uncovers his mouth, and looks behind her.  "There's a spy for King Simyang in this camp."

"Who is it?"

Seung Nyang shakes her head.  "We must first catch him.  Tell them to hang me back up on the crossbeam."

"Hit me once," Wang Yoo whispers.  (The thought of which actually excites him a little).

Seung Nyang punches him, knocking him to the floor.  She gets on top of him, and he does everything he can to keep his excitement under control.  She aims the knife at him, and he grabs her wrist.  They exchange knowing glances.

"Is anyone outside?"  Wang Yoo yells.

Moo Song and Eunuch Bang immediately appear in the doorway, followed by Jeom Bak and the man in blue.  Moo Song kicks Seung Nyang off of Wang Yoo, and into the wall.

Jeom Bak stands her up.  "You jerk!"

"Hang him outside, once again!"  Wang Yoo commands.  "I will execute him in the morning."

"I understand," says Jeom Bak.  "Come!"  He barks at Seung Nyang.  He and the man in blue drag her out.

"Are you all right?"  Eunuch Bang asks Wang Yoo.

"Something terrible was about to happen," says Moo Song.

A message is immediately attached to a dove's leg, and sent to Jo Cham.

Jo Cham takes off the message, and gets it to Wang Go.

*********

Jo  Cham and the governor are kneeling in front of Wang Go as he examines the message.

"It says that Seung Nyang will soon be executed," says Jo Cham.

"I cannot let that child die like that," says Wang Go.  "Tell Seung Nyang to reveal the location of the exchange."

"Your Royal Highness," says Jo Cham.  "What do you plan on doing?"

"You must move the troops," says Wang Go.

"Your Royal Highness!"  The governor exclaims.

"If it is the official guards, and not my private militia, even the spy probably won't catch their notice."

"I understand, Your Royal Highness," says the governor.

"But, even if it's not Seung Nyang, who is the crown prince's spy?"  Jo Cham implores.

"It shall soon be revealed," Wang Go whispers.  He doesn't want to believe that his protege could do such a thing.  "I will be sure to get to the bottom of this.  Surely."

Seung Nyang is hanging on the crossbeam, exhausted as hell.

A man approaches her from behind.  The same one who gave her the knife.  "His Royal Highness said to let him know the location of the exchange."

Seung Nyang looks up.

"There will be soldiers hidden there in ambush.  If you just let them know the location of the exchange, your work is finished."

"What about the Yuan Merchants there?"  Seung Nyang asks.

"We hid them at a tavern called Haewoljang in Byeokrando."  The man behind her moves closer, and he's the guy in blue who hung her up.  "If we succeed this time, His Royal Highness shall give us a great prize.  So, work hard."

The man in blue walks away, not noticing Wang Yoo, Moo Song, Eunuch Bang, and Jeom Bak observing from the balcony above.

"Th-That...That,"  Eunuch Bang stutters.  "The spy has finally revealed himself!"

The spy runs across the yard.

"I will go and immediately kill that thorn in our eye," says Jeom Bak.

Wang Yoo grabs his arm.  "You cannot kill him yet."

"Pardon?"  Jeom Bak asks.

Eunuch Bang, Wang Yoo, and Moo Song are walking around outside, while Jeom Bak and the spy are escorting Seung Nyang.  Jeom Bak pushes her to her knees.

"You will tell me the location of the exchange?"  Wang Yoo asks.

"Before that, you must promise me something," says Seung Nyang.

"Tell me," says Wang Yoo.

"Release my subordinates, and do not call for them to account for their crimes."

"I shall," Wang Yoo agrees.  "Tell me.  Where is the exchange location?"

Seung Nyang cautiously looks to the side.  "There is an abandoned village near Byeokrando."

"An abandoned village?"

"If you leave now, you should be able to reach there by tomorrow at the hour of the rabbit."

The spy smiles.  Jeom Bak is quick to take notice.

"He's a hoodlum who tried to kill you, Cooperative Elder," says Eunuch Bang.  "Do not believe all of what this brat says."

"If you take me along and find it is false, you can kill me right there," says Seung Nyang.

"I shall divide my troops into two," says Wang Yoo.  "Jeom Bak, pick ten agile men."

"Understood," says Jeom Bak.

Wang Yoo turns to Eunuch Bang.  "You remain here and monitor this brat's subordinates."

"Will it be suitable with just that troop number?"  Eunuch Bang asks.

"Our opponents are Yuan merchants.  If we have too many men, we will catch their notice."

Moo Song side eyes the spy.

"There is no time.  Hurry!"  Wang Yoo says.

Seung Nyang looks up and subtly nods at Wang Yoo.  He subtly nods back.

"Sheesh, you son of a bitch," Jeom Bak leads his ten men, Wang Yoo, Seung Nyang, and Moo Song away.

"You must be careful!"  Eunuch Bang yells.  He and the spy remain behind.

Wang Yoo waves.

"Go," Jeom Bak pushes Seung Nyang.

As Eunuch Bang and his group walk away, the spy runs in a different direction.  He runs through the forest, and uncovers the hidden messenger bird cage.  He grabs the dove, and attaches a message to the tube on its leg.  He throws the dove upward, and it is immediately struck down.

The spy has a sinking feeling in his stomach.

Eunuch Bang, Jeom Bak, Wang Yoo, and Moo Song emerge over the hill.  Seung Nyang is not far behind.

The spy's jaw drops.  "You betrayed us!"

"You shut up, you son of a bitch!"  Jeom Bak yells.  He draws his sword.  "You dare betray us!"

The spy unsheathes his sword and runs forward.

Moo Song gracefully jumps at him, and stabs him in the throat.

The spy limply falls to his knees.  Blood streams from his mouth, and he falls flat on his face.

"There is a tavern called Haewoljang in Byeokrando," says Seung Nyang.  "Hurry and catch those Yuan Merchant hoodlums."

"What's your reason?"  Wang Yoo inquires.  "Giving information to the Royal Office of Auditing, and helping me while you're putting your life at risk?"

"I only did what I had to do."

"Will you stay by my side?"  Wang Yoo asks.  "Help me while staying by my side.  Then..."

"I don't want to," Seung Nyang interjects sharply.

"Seung Nyang!"  Eunuch Bang whispers, he's running with the messenger dove in his hands.  Jeom Bak is beside him, Moo Seung is following them.

Seung Nyang hands Jeom Bak a message.  He slides it through the tube attached to the dove's leg.

"What secret message did you write?"  Wang Yoo asks.

"It's a plan to take them down without lifting a finger," Seung Nyang replies.

Eunuch Bang pets the bird, before throwing it into the air, and sending it off to Wang Go.

The messenger bird flies to Jo Cham.  He slides the message out of the tube.

"What?"  Wang Go asks.  "Deploy more men?"

Jo Cham kneels in front of Wang Go's table.

"The Crown Prince is gathering up other gangs in the area," Jo Cham explains.  "With the number of soldiers we have currently lying in ambush, we could lose."

"Take all the private militia we brought, and head there," says Wang Go.  "You must arrive before the Crown Prince."

"Yes, Your Royal Highness," Jo Cham bows.

*********

Jo Cham leads the private militia out of  Wang Go's residence.

They strategically place themselves, waiting for something to happen.  They walk further out into the area.

"Isn't it strange for it to be so quiet?"  Jo Cham asks.  "Find out where they are."

"Yes, Sir."

Arrows suddenly begin to fly, and some of the militia members are struck.  The remaining members draw their swords.

"The Crown Prince is already here!"  Jo Cham yells.  "Fight!  Fight!"

They charge forward into the darkness.

"They're salt thieves!"  The governor yells.

The Yuan Merchants and Wang Go's militia charge at each other, killing as many as they can.

Eunuch Bang and Seung Nyang are spying on the action.  Eunuch Bang smiles.  "Everything is...going the way you imagined."

"Then, I'll take my leave," says Seung Nyang.

"No," says Eunuch Bang.  "Let me ask for one more favor.  It will be dangerous, but there's something I would like for you to bring me."

Seung Nyang is tearing through the forest on a foggy day on her beautiful bay horse.  Her rhythm is in perfect sync with her horse, no harsh grip on the reins.  She guides her horse forward.  It's a race against time.  She gets to Wang Go's compound, jumps off her horse, bursts through the gate and runs up the steps.

She runs right into Wang Go, and he looks at her in surprise.

"Seung Nyang, what happened?"

"It was total annihilation," says Seung Nyang.  "Everyone died!"

"What do you mean annihilation?"  Wang Go shouts.  "How could that happen?"

"Mak Son," says Seung Nyang.  "He was the traitor."

"Mak Son?"  Wang Go asks incredulously.

"The Royal Office of Auditing is headed this way," Seung Nyang continues.  "You have to destroy the account books first."

"Mak Son," Wang Go growls.  "That bastard!"  He runs inside.

Wang Go throws the doors open to his room, and folds the partition back.  He grabs a key from one of the drawers, and unlocks the door to a secret compartment in the wall.  He frantically pulls out a box, and sets it on the table.  He takes out a green satin bag, and he hands it to Seung Nyang.

He looks at her warily.  "Seung Nyang...how did you come back alive?"

She drops to her knees.  "Please kill me.  Even if I died, I wanted to die by your hands, Your Highness."

Wang Go eyes her curiously.  The vibe feels weird.  He drops the bag on the table.  "Burn them.  We can't leave anything behind."

Seung Nyang grabs the pouch and stands up.  "Yes, Your Highess," she bows.

Wang Go still feels suspicious.

Two guards run in as Seung Nyang exits.  "Please escape before the Royal Auditors get here," says a guard.

"Escape?"  Wang Go's voice cracks.  "You're telling me, King Simyang, to run away?!"

"Your Highness," the guards plead.

"I will go to the Palace," Wang Go growls.  "Tell all the Royal Ministers to come to the royal palace now.  I have to gather all the soldiers who are still alive, and prevent the Crown Prince from entering the palace.  Even if they all die, we need to buy time!"

"Yes, Your Highness."  The Guards bow.

As they exit, Wang Go laughs bitterly.  "Crown Prince!"  He slaps the doorway.  "Crown Prince!  I am King Simyang!  I will not die like this.  I will never!"

Seung Nyang races over on her bay horse to her meeting place with Eunuch Bang.  He takes her reins while she dismounts.

"Did you bring them?"  Eunuch Bang asks.

She takes the green bag off her back, and hands it to Eunuch Bang.  "What happened to the traders from Yuan?"

"They're being rounded up and brought here," says Eunuch Bang.  He thumbs through the account books and smiles.  "Seung Nyang, you've done a great thing for this nation.  Is there anything you want?  There will be a big reward over this.  Tell me anything you want."

"By chance, does the Royal Office of Auditing find people, too?"

"Who?"  Eunuch Bang asks.  "Is there someone you're searching for?"

"No," Seung Nyang says quickly.  "Never mind."  She bows.

Seung Nyang leads her horse away, while Eunuch Bang excitedly runs up the steps.  Finally, they have something to take King Simyang down with.

Seung Nyang touches her mother's ring, which she has been wearing on a leather string around her neck.  She pets her horse, and they walk away, with expectations of getting back to her men and moving on.

Wang Go bursts into the King's room.

"This is disrespectful!"  The Queen snaps.

Wang Go kneels.  "Your Majesty, the Crown Prince has passed away."

The King gasps.  "How in the world?  What do you mean?"

"What do you mean he has passed away?"  The Queen asks.

"He was smuggling salt, and fought with the soldiers who were regulating it," Wang Go lies.

"Oh my..." The King gasps.

"Your Majesty," says the Queen.

"There's no way," says the King.  "The Crown Prince is dead?"

"The Royal Ministers are all at the Royal Palace, requesting your presence," says Wang Go.  "You must re-establish the dignity of the royal family at once."

"This can't be," sobs the King.  "How could this happen to the Crown Prince?"  His head falls onto the Queen's shoulder.

"Your Majesty, please hand over the throne to King Simyang," says the Queen.  "I cannot see you in pain any longer."

"Crown Prince..." The King sobs.

The Queen looks up at Wang Go and knowingly smirks.

*******

Meanwhile, Wang Yoo and his men are being blocked from entering the capitol.

"King Simyang will become the King of Goryeo!"  One of Wang Go's soldiers shouts.

Wang Yoo looks at him in shock.

Jeom Bak points his sword at the guard.  "That bastard, what did he just say?"

"Abdication," says Wang Yoo.  "My father, the King, intends to abdicate  his throne to King Simyang."

"We must get to the palace!"  Moo Song says.

"Make way!"  Wang Yoo points his finger and shouts.

Jeom Bak and several other men push a heavy cart against the barricade, knocking several of Wang Go's soldiers back.

"Let's go!"  Moo Song shouts.  He runs onto the cart and jumps up, and over the barricade.  He strikes the guards from overhead.  Wang Yoo follows suit.  The two men run through the street, striking down anyone who dares to oppose them.

**********

The King wearily sits on the throne after crying for several hours.  He really doesn't want to contend with the hungry sharks standing in the palace, ready to spout off a string of opinions.  He braces himself.

"Your Majesty, due to the Crown Prince's virtueless actions," shouts a minister, "the dignity of the palace and your governors have fallen to the ground!"

"If our people find out, there will be turmoil!"

The King even has one shark standing on each side of him.  Wang Go on the right, and the Queen on the left.  He just wants to go back to bed.

"The only way to avert this crisis is to hand over the throne to King Simyang!"

Wang Go smirks.  Just about everyone in the room is working for him.  He's feeling like he's Big Pimpin' right now.

"Your Majesty, please understand our meaning!"

"Please understand our meaning, Your Majesty!"  The ministers bow.

Wang Go smirks.  His pimp hand is way strong.

"Listen well," says the King.  "At this moment, I plan on giving up my sovereign authority as King."

Wang Go's heart races.

"From now on, the one who will rule over Goryeo...after me is---"

The solemnity and relative silence is broken by the sound of the wooden doors loudly opening.  Wang Yoo confidently strides through.  The King is relieved to see him.  Wang Go and the rest are horrified.

"How did that happen?"  The Queen whispers nervously.

Wang Yoo looks around at the ministers.  "Why are you all so surprised?  Did you see a ghost?"

"Crown Prince!"  The King gasps.  "You were alive?"

Wang Yoo bows.  "I apologize for making you worry, Father.  King Simyang told you I died smuggling salt, didn't he?  The one who stole the salt and illegally traded it with Yuan, and who tried to kill me, while setting me up...Why don't you tell everyone, King Simyang?"

"What are you talking about?"  Wang Go snarls.

The King collapses in his seat.

"The one who illegally traded in salt wasn't me," says Wang Yoo.  "It was King Simyang!"  He points to Wang Go.  "You!"

The King looks at Wang Go in disbelief.

"Do you have proof?"  Wang Go asks confidently.  "If you do, let's see it."

"If you wait a little," says Wang Yoo, "the traders from Yuan will arrive."

"Your Majesty, with proof that he doesn't have, he's trifling with me.  Please immediately proclaim your abdication," Wang Go bows.

"Please proclaim your abdication!"  The ministers bow.

"Please proclaim your abdication!"

The door pops open once again.  Eunuch Bang humbly walks in, carrying the green bag.  "We have the proof right here."

Wang Go's temperature rises, and his heart drops.

Eunuch Bang whispers to Wang Yoo.

"What is an official doing in the Royal Palace?"  Wang Go snaps.

Wang Yoo undoes the bag and brandishes Wang Go's accounting books.  "Do you know what these are?"

Worst fears confirmed.  Wang Go wants to throw up, and then beat the shit out of Seung Nyang.

"They're the records of the salt smuggling trade that King Simyang himself has done."

Was it you, Seung Nyang? Wang Go thinks.

"Goryeo's salt is more precious than gold to the Imperial Family of Yuan.  If they find out about this, we will no longer have their protection," says Wang Yoo.

"Tell me what this is all about!"  The King yells at Wang Go.  "Why can't you tell me?  Is the Crown Prince right?"

Wang Go gnashes his teeth.  "Yes," he admits.  "I did it."

The King gasps.

Wang Yoo smiles.  Wang Go gives him the death stare.

Wang Go walks down the steps, and gets in front of Wang Yoo.

"Do you know what I did with all that money?"  Wang Go asks.  "In place of the incompetent Crown Prince, to preserve his Majesty's throne, I spent the money on the Imperial Family of Yuan."  He turns to face the king.  "Call it high treason, if you must.  So, as the law requires, please take this Wang Go's head."  He gets down on his knees.

"What did you say?"  The King asks.

"Even as I violated the law, I did not hesitate for a moment.  Because I believed that my actions were correct.  So, please order for my head to be decapitated, your majesty."

Another minister kneels.  "Please, also, behead me, Prime Minister Tae Pyeong Rok!"

Other ministers follow suit.  "Please, behead me first, Minister Kim Yeong!"

"Please behead me first, Minister Park Hak Ki!"

"Please, also, behead me!"

Wang Yoo is fuming at the number of ministers Wang Go has managed to pimp.

The Queen helps the King rise.

"I will proclaim my abdication," says the King.  Everyone waits in anticipation.  "The Crown Prince will now...be the ruler of Goryeo!"

Wang Yoo's heart skips a beat.  This is it!

Wang Go's eyes widen with shock.  His counter attack and melodramatic apology has backfired.

"In addition," says the King, "in my last moment on the royal throne, I will pardon King Simyang's error."

Wang Yoo looks at his pushover of a father in disbelief.  Is Wang Go pimping him, too?  "Royal Father!"

"We cannot allow public opinion to be divided," says the King.  "Please abide by my will, Crown Prince."

Wang Go acts quickly, as he knows politics is a game and a dance.  He stands up and faces Wang Yoo.  "I give my thanks and congratulations."  Wang Go bows.

"Thanks and congratulations, Your Majesty," the ministers repeat.  They kowtow at Wang Yoo's feet.

The Queen, who is close to the same age as Wang Yoo, shoots him the death stare.

Wang Yoo glares at Wang Go.  This victory is very bittersweet.
