"Love and Redemption," is based on the novel "Liu Li Mei Ren Sha," by Shi Si Lang. The writings presented here are based on observations from the television series.
Heng Yang and Hao Chen are on the edge of the dock over the lake concealing the secret ground. They are using as much energy as they can to repair the barrier. Hao Chen is hyper focused, but his efforts aren't working.
Aunt Hong, Sect Leader Chu, and Xuanji are observing them in action. Xuanji is hoping with every fiber of her being that her father isn't going to see this as an opportunity to pressure her into marrying Hao Chen again...
Heng Yang and Hao Chen increase their output of energy.
"How did such a big hole appear?" Asks Heng Yang.
"Much of our powers have been absorbed by it," says Hao Chen, "yet it has no effect at all. Don't tell me the Heartless Tactics don't work anymore?"
They withdraw their energy in frustration.
"Senior Heng Yang, what should we do?" Asks Sect Leader Chu.
Heng Yang and Hao Chen approach them.
"I'll set up the Secret Formation," says Heng Yang. "Maybe it can hold on for a short while, but it can't last for long. If we want a long term solution, we can only depend on Xuanji and Hao Chen."
Ew!!! Not again...However, Xuanji conceals her disgust well.
"You and Hao Chen need to get married," says Heng Yang, "and the two of you need to practice Sentimental Tactics together."
Xuanji's skin crawls.
"Only then will the barrier be stabilized." Heng Yang continues, "And we can protect the secret ground."
Sect Leader Chu contains his giddy excitement.
"Senior Hao Chen and I? No way!" Says Xuanji.
Hao Chen glares at her.
"You and Hao Chen are destined to be together," Heng Yang insists, "and you two have been together all your lives. Why can't you practice the Sentimental Tactics with him?"
"I've explained this to my father already," Xuanji faces Sect Leader Chu. "Father, I..."
"Ah, la la!" Yes! Teng She fabulously interrupts the scary direction all of this badgering is headed in. "What, you're marrying your Senior?" He asks Xuanji.
"Who are you?" Sect Leader Chu asks sternly and judgmentally.
"This is my friend, Teng She," says Xuanji. Words cannot express how relieved she is that he's here.
"What's wrong with you?" Asks Teng She. "It's fine that you forget about King Bailing. But, why are you abandoning that great chef? Is your senior a great chef, as well?" He points to Hao Chen. He doesn't recognize him as King Bailing.
Hao Chen glares at him.
Teng She does a double take. "I feel like I've seen him before," he loudly whispers to Xuanji.
"Outsider, how dare you invade our secret ground!" Hao Chen says authoritatively.
Teng She rolls his eyes. Great King Bailing, this man is uptight!
"Leave now!" Hao Chen snaps.
"Mortal! How dare you shout at me! Do you want to die? Why should I enter your secret ground? There's nothing good in there!" He smiles at Xuanji. "I won't enter unless there's some delicious food." He looks at everyone else, "But there's nothing inside! There's only a short tempered, one eyed dragon! I'm sure it's not delicious. There's no reason for me to enter!"
Sect Leader Chu's eyes widen. "How did you know that the Candle Dragon is our guardian? Don't tell me you're a spy from Tianxu Hall?"
"Father, he's not a spy from Tianxu Hall," says Xuanji. "He's my spirit beast."
"Spirit beast?" Asks Sect Leader Chu.
Teng She's eyes widen with horror. "I'm your friend!" He insists.
"He's my friend, as well."
"When did you tame a spirit beast like him?" Asks Sect Leader Chu. "Is he just like Lu Yan Ran, a spirit beast who acquired human form?"
"Kssh," hisses Teng She, snaking his neck. "Father of Stinky Woman, can you not compare me with that low class creature? I'm a divine snake who has trained for 1,000 years! I would never become her spirit beast if it weren't for my careless mistake."
Xuanji gives him a sharp look.
"So," says Aunt Hong, "according to what you said, you're a heavenly officer?"
"Yes," Teng She nods. "I'm the one and only Lord Teng She."
"You're 25 years old at most. You don't look like a heavenly officer," says Aunt Hong. "Xuanji, you mustn't let him deceive you."
"Aiiii!" Teng She says. "Eeeya! I...I'm a heavenly officer! You mortals have no common sense at all! Do you know that King Bailing begs me to do his tasks for him?"
Hao Chen glares at him, but at this point, when isn't Hao Chen glaring at someone?
"He sent me and the Four Sacred Beasts here to construct your secret ground!" Snaps Teng She. "Heartless Tactics and Sentimental Tactics?" He scoffs. "You even want stinky woman to marry another guy? Listen up. Do you believe it or not? I can fix your stupid barrier by using a tiny bit of my power."
Xuanji smiles.
"This barrier is constructed by beings of the Heavenly Realm," says Sect Leader Chu. "It's fine for you to crack inappropriate jokes, but how could you disrespect them?"
"Father, Teng She is a heavenly officer indeed," says Xuanji. "Just let him try and fix the barrier."
"Nonsense!" Snaps Hao Chen. "This concerns the Three Realms! How could you joke around? Xuanji, you better leave with your spirit beast."
"Fine. You mortals are looking down on me, huh?" Asks Teng She. "I'll show you my power."
Xuanji smiles as he walks past the arrogant elders, who were just five minutes ago trying to control her love life. He hisses at Hao Chen as he gets to the edge of the dock.
With a swift and well coordinated movement of his hands, he draws forth fiery energy between his palms. He pushes forward a small vortex of fire, shooting multiple flames at the hole.
Xuanji is exceedingly happy, as this may finally put the "let's get married to Hao Chen" shennanigans in its final resting place.
Aunt Hong and Sect Leader Chu are impressed.
With more well coordinated arm movements, the fiery vortex disappears, and the hole in the barrier is sealed.
"He did fix the barrier," says Heng Yang, completely in awe.
"Stinky Woman, I've solved your trouble. You better ask Yu Sifeng to cook something delicious for me."
"Sure. Thank you, Teng She," Xuanji beams. "He'll cook everything you want."
Teng She grins.
Hao Chen is once again glaring, and looking like a sore loser. Or, perhaps that's his resting facial expression?
Teng She is enjoying a variety of cakes in the main hall. He is like a kid with unlimited amounts of money in the candy store.
"Sect Leader, please look," Aunt Hong hands Sect Leader Chu a scroll. "He does look like the painting."
Teng She gets up from where he's sitting, and strolls over to the opened scroll. "Stop it already. Let me have a look."
He's extremely unimpressed. "Chh...What an ugly painting. I'm much more handsome."
"Greetings, Heavenly Officer." Heng Yang, Sect Leader Chu, and Aunt Hong bow.
"Hmm?" Says Teng She.
"Father, what are you doing?" Asks Xuanji.
"Heavenly Officer, the entire Shaoyang Sect needs your help," says Sect Leader Chu.
"Uncle," says Teng She, "can you stop scaring me? Speak in a normal tone."
"Heavenly Officer," says Sect Leader Chu, "you may not know this. The Flower Session will be held once every four years. Now, Dianjinggu Sect is the one holding it, and every Sect Leader is fretting over this. If Tianxu Hall steals the spirit keys during this event, the secret ground will be in danger. Heavenly Officer, you came just in time. My Lord, I hope you can help us out."
"Now that Xuanji has immense powers," adds Aunt Hong, "my Lord, if you accompany her to Dianjinggu Sect, you two will surely be able to defeat all the demons."
Sect Leader Chu and Heng Yang nod in acknowledgement.
"What is she saying?" Teng She asks Xuanji.
"You can fight," Xuanji whispers.
"I can fight? Sure!" Teng She is thrilled. Finally! He gets to flex his muscles.
"No!" The pissy faced Hao Chen interjects. "As a heavenly officer, you mustn't interfere with mortal affairs. If not, the heavens will punish you. That is the heavenly law."
Teng She snakes his neck and hisses.
"Am I right, my Lord?" Asks the glaringly hypocritical Hao Chen.
"How did you know all of that?" Teng She asks suspiciously. "Huh?" He growls.
Teng She walks up to Hao Chen. "Wait! You look familiar. Have I seen you before?"
Hao Chen stealthily casts some energy over his face to distort his original appearance as King Bailing.
"Let me test you," Teng She continues. He generates energy from the palm of his hand, and presses it against Hao Chen's chest.
All of that energy is so painful that Hao Chen has to sit.
"Teng She!" Xuanji runs up to Hao Chen.
Teng She laughs loudly.
"You mustn't bully him!" Says Xuanji. Although, it was most certainly long overdue...
"Your senior is weak," smirks Teng She. "You trained with him? It's no wonder you're weak, too!"
Hao Chen knows he can't say a goddamned thing. He's in a corner that he brought upon himself when he also decided to break the heavenly rules. Yet, he is of the mentality that it is somehow different because it's him, and he's extra special.
Teng She arrogantly snakes his neck.
Hao Chen looks like a deer in headlights. He really can't say a goddamn thing, and it's glorious.
"Senior, I have an idea," says Xuanji. "Heavenly Officers can't interfere with mortal affairs, indeed. But now, he's my spirit beast. If the Tianxu Hall comes for me, and puts me in a dangerous situation, I don't think he's breaking the law if he assists me by then." She is beginning to learn to work the loopholes that Hao Chen didn't want her to know.
"Xuanji," Hao Chen says desperately.
Teng She claps his hands in Hao Chen's face. "Stinky Woman, you're smart! That's decided, then. Come, let's slay some demons and enjoy some good food!" He gives Hao Chen a look.
Hao Chen is flabbergasted. Teng She and Xuanji working together puts him at a huge disadvantage.
"Sect Leader," says Hao Chen desperately.
"Heavenly Officer, if that's the case, please travel with us to Dianjinggu Sect, then," says Sect Leader Chu. And just like that, Hao Chen has been replaced.
"I..." sputters Hao Chen.
Teng She smirks. He is enjoying Hao Chen's frustration. Xuanji and Teng She exchange glances before exiting the hall.
Hao Chen looks like someone who just had the rug pulled out from under his feet. Two can play at this game, sweetheart.
Teng She and Xuanji get back to her room. He takes a seat as they decide to talk business.
"Listen, I've searched around Mount Buzhou," says Teng She. "I didn't discover Ruo Yu's body. There's only a bloody shirt. It was too dirty. I didn't bring it back."
Xuanji wrinkles her nose. "Only a bloody shirt was left? Don't tell me Tianxu Hall has captured Ruo Yu?"
Teng She savors a blueberry.
Little do they know, Hao Chen is being creeping around the corner and listening.
"My King," Si Ming bows. He and Hao Chen are meeting up in a secret cave.
"What's with that Teng She?" Snaps Hao Chen.
"Well," Si Ming says sheepishly. "I've ordered guards to keep watch over him. I don't know when Lord Teng She descended to the mortal realm, but it's fine. He's someone's pet now. He deserved that." Si Ming chuckles.
"He didn't create trouble in the heavens," says Hao Chen, "but he came and created trouble for me!" He looks at Si Ming expectantly. "Can you remove that annoying snake somehow?"
"Ugh," Si Ming says uncertainly, as he knows Hao Chen will shit his pants. "About that...Teng She is Xuanji's spirit beast now. I can't do anything. If I do anything, the Heavenly Emperor will be able to sense it. When he senses this, he'll be able to detect your presence, too. I really can't do anything."
"What's the use of keeping you?" Asks Hao Chen.
"My King, there's another thing," says Si Ming. "You asked me to seal God of War's Life Pillar, right? But I can't suppress it anymore. I'm afraid the God of War will awaken sooner or later."
"What?" Asks Hao Chen.
Si Ming bows. "My King, please forgive me. The Mirror Of Origin is a heavenly item. Since it has triggered her to recover some of her memories, it's hard to reverse it. I can't do anything about it. But in my opinion, it isn't necessarily a bad thing for Teng She to be here. That demon who used his malignant aura to trap Xuanji, I'm sure he's trying to go after the God of War. So, Teng She can serve as an aide, instead."
A light slowly flickers on in Hao Chen's head.
"Am I right?" Asks Si Ming.
"Now, the demons are getting stronger," Hao Chen concedes. "Some of them are even elders of the Five Great Sects. It's hard to guard against them, indeed. Fine." Hao Chen sighs. "I'll leave that annoying snake around Xuanji for now. At least he can protect her."
Si Ming nods in agreement. He really wants Hao Chen to back off a little. This man is exhausting! He feels like a male governess to a spoiled teenage boy.
"The most important thing now is to find the demon with the malignant aura. Only then, I can rest at ease." Hao Chen continues.
Si Ming nods.
Xuanji slides open the doors while holding a plate of four delicious cakes.
Linglong is sitting upright in her bed, dealing with some super intrusive thoughts.
"Linglong," Xuanji says gently. She sits down on her bed. "You're awake."
"Xuanji," Linglong says nervously.
"I brought you your favorite osmanthus cake," says Xuanji.
"Xuanji," Linglong says anxiously, "where's Little Six? Why isn't he here to see me?"
Xuanji clenches her fist. "The Hairpin Tournament will be held soon. Father wants Sixth Senior to lead our juniors for the training."
"Xuanji, stop lying to me. I vaguely recall that he went to Tianxu Hall to save me. But I don't remember anything else. Did something happen to him?"
"I..." Xuanji says uncertainly.
"Tell me!" Linglong insists. She grabs Xuanji's arms.
"I..." Xuanji thinks carefully. "Sixth Senior committed some mistakes, and he broke our rules. Now, he's locked up in a cell."
"What did he do to break our rules?" Linglong asks anxiously. "Did Father make things difficult for him?"
"No. Don't worry," Xuanji says quickly. "Although Father was angry, he still cares for him. He lets us visit him often."
"No! I need to find him!" Linglong gets out of bed.
Xuanji stops her.
Linglong looks at the cakes, and has an intrusive memory from Tianxu Hall. "Your favorite food isn't glutinous rice cake," says Little Six. "It's osmanthus cake." Looking at the cakes in front of her makes her want to gag. Her head aches as she remembers the guards force feeding glutinous rice cakes to Little Six.
"Send Minjue some of your favorite glutinous rice cakes," says Wu Tong.
She recalls sitting on Wu Tong's lap, giggling and drinking wine. Little Six is on the verge of tears.
Her headache intensifies.
"Linglong, what's wrong?" Asks Xuanji. She puts the cakes on the table as Linglong begins to melt down.
"Don't touch me!" Linglong shrieks. She's sobbing and shaking. "Xuanji, I...I want to be alone for now. Please leave."
"Linglong."
"Please listen to me. Please, leave me alone. Just go."
"I..."
Linglong hides under her blankets.
"Linglong! Linglong, Sixth Senior misses you, as well. He wants to see you, too." Xuanji tries to pull back the blankets. "Linglong, please don't be like this."
"I beg you! Leave me alone!" Linglong sobs.
Xuanji feels absolutely helpless, and a little freaked out. However, she respects Linglong's wish, and quietly leaves.
Teng She slides open the doors, sniffing the air for some food. He finds the osmanthus cakes next to Linglong's bed, and stealthily runs to them, like a kid sneaking into his mother's candy stash, while she's taking a nap.
I knew it. That Yu Sifeng must be hiding the food he had made somewhere.
He grabs a cake. So, it's here. He gets ready to take a bite.
"Who's there?" Linglong sits straight up.
Teng She jumps. "I'm a heavenly officer. Everyone here bows to me, you know! Be quiet!"
"You're stealing my food! Someone! There's a thief!"
Teng She shoots golden energy from his hand, silencing Linglong. "Stop shouting! You'll call Stinky Woman here, you know?" He looks around anxiously. "It's lucky that she didn't come. I'd be in trouble if she does. She'll nag at me all day!"
Linglong looks at him fearfully. Right now, her trust in unfamiliar men with power is nil.
"Sss..." Says Teng She. He looks at her closely. "You're Stinky Woman's sister, right? My goodness. I retrieved your primordial spirit, you know? What's wrong with eating your osmanthus cake? You're so petty." He grabs a cake, and takes a huge bite.
Linglong watches him sadly. Teng She sees her crying, not realizing his transactional expectations are also very much a trigger. "I'm sorry! I won't eat them! I'll return these to you, okay." He puts the half eaten cake back on the plate. "Please don't cry. I won't eat them. Ai ya." He puts the plate down. "Sister, why are you so useless? You're crying over such trivial matters. Do you know someone risked his life, and suffered tremendously in order to retrieve your primordial spirit? If he sees you crying, I'm sure his tears will flood the room." He awkwardly wipes her tears. "Stop crying. I need to go now. Promise me this. Promise me that you'll not shout after I undo the spell. Blink twice if you agree."
Linglong rapidly blinks her eyes twice.
"Okay," says Teng She. "If you shout after I undo the spell, I'll burn your hair and make you go bald. Okay. I'll go now." He shoots a stream of golden energy from his hand. As he stands up, Linglong pulls him down.
"Wait!" Says Linglong.
He tries to break away. "You're going back on your words?"
"You said someone risked his life for me. That person is Minyan, right?"
Teng She is backed into the doors.
"Xuanji and the rest wouldn't tell me anything." She grabs his arms. "Do you know something? Tell me about it!"
"I only know a little bit," says Teng She. "That Zhong Minyan, he became a spy in Tianxu Hall in order to retrieve your primordial spirit."
"A spy?"
"I think he became a spy because he was deceived. He killed someone in order to acquire the villain's trust."
"He killed someone?" Asks Linglong. "Who did he kill?"
Teng She pauses. "It's the Stinky Woman's Second Senior."
Linglong's eyes widen.
"He suffered a terrible fate," says Teng She. "He was chopped into pieces."
"Second Senior?" Linglong whispers. She recalls going into his prison cell in a dark cave to give him some cakes.
"Wu Tong gege asked me to give you some food." She opens the basket and takes out a plate of cakes. "Have some food."
Chen Minjue looks at the plate warily.
"Here," says Linglong. She gives him an osmanthus cake, and he takes a bite. "Are they nice?"
Minjue begins to convulse.
"What's wrong with you?" Asks Linglong.
He falls over, taking his final breath.
Linglong backs away from Teng She. Little Six isn't the killer. She turns away, covers her mouth, and sobs.
Meanwhile, Little Six is in his cell, paying for Linglong and Wu Tong's crimes.
Sifeng and Xuanji pay him a visit. The guards open his cell door.
"Sixth Senior," says Xuanji.
"Xuanji?" He rises from his bed.
Xuanji places a basket of food on the table.
"Sifeng?" Says Little Six.
"Sixth Senior, I've brought you some food," says Xuanji.
"Where's Linglong? How is she? Is she awake?" Asks Little Six.
"She's awake now," Xuanji says awkwardly. "She's doing well. Sixth Senior, don't worry."
"This is great," says Little Six. He isn't as sharp as Linglong when it comes to picking up on lies. "So, where is she? Didn't she follow you here?"
Xuanji looks around uncomfortably. "Sixth Senior, the food is hot. You should eat it now. If not, it will get cold."
"Linglong..." A light flickers on in Little Six's head. "Is she not willing to see me?"
Linglong is quietly sneaking through the prison.
"It's not like that!" Xuanji backpedals. "She..."
"You don't need to lie," says Little Six. "If she wants to see me, she would've been here right away. She's right. I was a fool. I was deceived by Tianxu Hall. It's normal if she doesn't want to see me. If I were her, I would've ignored a person like me."
"Minyan, don't think too much," says Sifeng. "Linglong...she's very worried about you."
"Yes, Sixth Senior," Xuanji agrees. "She's really worried about you. She...She's busy with something."
"I understand," says Little Six.
Linglong is sadly listening in, undetected.
"That's why she..." Xuanji continues.
"Linglong...she always hates evildoers," says Little Six. "I've committed a grave mistake. I have no right to beg for her forgiveness, but I don't regret my decision. If I could turn back time, I would've made the same decision. I'm willing to do anything, as long as I can save Linglong. The only thing I'm sorry about...is Second Senior."
"Second..." Says Xuanji. "Regarding Second Senior, did you really kill him?"
Little Six clenches his fist. "Yes," he lies. "I'm ashamed to face him."
Tears stream down Linglong's face. She is hit with another intrusive flashback.
"My beloved Linglong," Wu Tong pulls her closer, "was the one behind your Second Senior's death."
"Me?" Asks Linglong.
Linglong starts to sob.
Little Six pulls out his dagger. "Sifeng. Xuanji. I need you two to pass a message to Linglong, okay? Tell her that I was lying. I didn't love her at all. My promises don't count now. I've committed a grave mistake. I have no right to like her anymore. Tell her that she doesn't need to be awkward. It's just that...I can't accompany her for the rest of her life. Ask her to take good care of herself. If she meets someone she likes in the future, you must persuade her."
Linglong's heart breaks.
"Tell her not to throw tantrums that often. If not, people won't understand her, they may think she's not good enough. It'll be painful for me. I just hope that Linglong can stay happy in the future. That's enough for me."
Teng She sneaks up behind a heartbroken Linglong. "Sss!"
Linglong jumps, and hides her face.
"Why are you crying here?" Asks Teng She. "You should go in since you're here. Ah, you're too embarrassed? I'll call them out, then."
"Don't!" Says Linglong. "I was the one who let down Little Six. I've committed so many atrocious acts in Tianxu Hall, yet he...it's all because of me. He wouldn't have been deceived if it weren't for me. He wouldn't have been misunderstood, as well. I've let him down."
Teng She sighs, shrugs, and smiles. "I don't understand you mortals." He walks away.
"Sect Leader has issued an order. Zhong Minyan is to be summoned." An inbound disciple states.
Linglong peeks from behind the pillar.
Little Six is being escorted out of his cell.
"Where are you taking Sixth Senior?" Asks Xuanji.
"Senior. Xuanji. Master said he's holding an open trial for him," says the disciple.
Xuanji runs after him, while Sifeng walks behind. Linglong goes out from behind the pillar, and quietly follows after them.
