American Perspectives: Moment of Truth Pt. 2 ("Love and Redemption" Ep. 11)

"Love and Redemption," is based on the novel "Liu Li Mei Ren Sha," by Shi Si Lang.  The writings presented here are based on observations from the television series.

 

The Demon Girl in blue and green approaches the hanging bodies of Little Six, Ruo Yu, and Little Silver Flower.  The blood fruit growing from them is coming along nicely.

"Their spiritual powers are not bad," she says.  "The Blood Fruits smell nice.  This should do."

 

"It worked!" Xuanji cheers gleefully.

Sifeng continues to play his melody.

The Rain Butterflies lead them to the tree that Little Six, Ruo Yu, and Little Silver Flower are hanging from.  A dagger is fired at the Demon Girl in blue and green, who immediately disappears in a fog of blue energy.  The three disciples are shot down from the tree.

Linglong hands Xuanji a hat.  She, Linglong, and Sifeng put the hats on the unconscious disciples.

Little Six looks up at Linglong.

"You're up," says Linglong.

"Linglong, great, you're all right." Says Little Six.

"Of course I'm all right.  I saved you after all.  Can you get up?"

The Demon Girl in the blue and green hanfu materializes on a tree.  She brings forth two blood fruits.  "Both of these blood fruits are wasted," she says to the disciples.  "Pay with your lives!"  She points the fruits at them, the fruits bursting into red energy, and bringing forth many vines.

"Watch out everyone!" says Sifeng.  The disciples jump.

Everyone avoids the vines except Linglong, however, Little Six is able to promptly cut them from her.

Xuanji uses her umbrella as a shield.

Little Silver Flower and Ruo Yu use their swords.

A vine goes for Xuanji's ankle.

"Watch out!" Yells Sifeng.  He cuts the vine away from her.

The vines get hacked to pieces, but it's a tough fight.  The thick vines wrap around Sifeng, making him look like a beehive.  It breaks the Aoyin rope that had been binding him and Xuanji together.  Sifeng is completely wrapped in the vines.

Blue energy shines from Xuanji's hand.  "Let go of Sifeng!  Come at me!"  She hurls her umbrella at the girl.  The girl disappears.

Xuanji flies to Sifeng, and with her flat palm against the vines,  she's able to bust him free in one shot.

Sifeng can't stay awake.

"Sifeng, wake up!" says Xuanji.

He jolts awake.  

"Are you all right?" asks Xuanji.

He pulls her close to him, and they fly up in the air to avoid more vines.  They look into each others eyes, and the cracks in that hideous Lover's Curse Mask begin to light up.  He momentarily faints in her arms, and they come back down.

"Sifeng, are you all right?"  asks Xuanji.

"I'm all right," says Sifeng.  "Use the Five Elements Spell to summon the Golden Touch."

She applies the spell to her umbrella, which emits a purple glow.  It circles around them.

"Demon cut!" Sifeng aims upward, bringing forth golden energy, his sword looking like fire.  He stabs it into the ground.  A huge spiral of smoke encircles them, spreading through the forest.

 

Xuanji is sleeping in Sifeng's arms at the trunk of a destroyed tree.  He rests his chin on her head.  He doesn't want to let her go.

"Whenever you get hurt by love," Deputy Chief's voice echos, "each Green Feather mark will turn into a Red Feather on your chest.  When all three Green Feather marks turn into Red Feather marks, your blood will flow backward, and you'll die."  The Green Feathers are prominently displayed on his arm like a tattoo.

Xuanji wakes up.  "Sifeng.  We're saved," she smiles.

"Yes, we're saved."

"Xuanji!" Linglong yells.

"Linglong!"

"Sifeng!" yells Little Silver Flower.  She grabs his arm.  "Are you all right?  How are you?"

Linglong and Xuanji hug.
Little Silver Flower sees the Green Feathers on Sifeng's arm.  "Did...Did you..."

He swiftly covers his arm.  "This isn't the place to talk.  We'll deal with those demon spirits first.  Let's go."

Little Silver Flower glares at Xuanji.

They walk through the overgrown, but bright and sunny, bamboo forest.

The blue and green clothed Demon Girl is seen running, white energy emitting from her body.  Additional Demon Girls are seen playing.

"Demon Spirits are formless," says Ruo Yu.  "Quickly use the Demon Slayer Charm."

"We're in the middle of nowhere," says Linglong.  "Where can we get the charm?"

"I have it," says Xuanji.  She throws her arm in the air, and she tosses forward a big piece of white, transparent cloth.  It lands on the Demon Girl in blue and green.

The Demon Girl gasps and stuggles to break free.

"It's you!" says Xuanji.  "Your formation has killed many!  I'm going to kill you!"

"Please spare her," a familiar male voice shouts.  Elder Brother Liu descends from the sky.  He immediately removes the Demon Charm.

"Who are you?" asks Little Six.

"Wait!" says Sifeng.  "This is my friend.  Eldest Brother Liu, what's wrong with you?"

"Little Phoenix, it's a long story.  It's all her fault."  Brother Liu looks at the Demon Girl.  "Admit that you're wrong!"

"It's none of your business!" Demon Girl snaps.

"None of my business?"  Brother Liu is horrified.  "If I hadn't saved you from the bad guys, you'd be hiding from me, wouldn't you?  And they controlled and made you hunt people again.  If I hadn't gotten here in time, you'd be dead by now!"

"You're so annoying, Old Man!" Demon Girl snaps.

"Wha--I'm a good looking and charismatic young man.  And you called me an old man?"

Sifeng buts in.  "Eldest Brother Liu, is this Yu'er?"

He nods sheepishly.

Linglong and Little Six glare at him.

"Sifeng, who is this Elder Brother Liu?" asks Little Six.  "Why is he on the Demon Spirit's side?"

"We're from the same Sect," answers Sifeng.  "He's my senior."

"Little Phoenix, you need not cover up for me.  Let me introduce myself.  I'm Liu Yiuhan, the abandoned disciple of  Lize Palace."

"I see," says Linglong.  "Eldest Brother, what's your relationship with this Demon Spirit?"

Brother Liu puts his arm around Yu'er and smiles proudly, while she is absolutely mortified.  "This is my daughter.  Her name is Yu'er."  He squeezes her tightly.

"Your daughter?  She's a demon spirit," says Linglong.  "You seem very young.  She doesn't look like your daughter.  Did you..."

"Don't misunderstand me," Brother Liu interjects.  "It's just that I take good care of myself.  As for Yu'er, she's really just half demon.  She had an accident some time ago and she died and became a demon spirit.  She's a naughty and immature kid.  I apologize."

"Anyway," says Little Six, "an eye for an eye.  Your daughter has killed many people.  She should be executed."

"Augh!" Brother Liu stands in front of Yu'er.  "That won't do.  She's died once.  She can't die again."

"You gave birth to her with a demon," Linglong says judgmentally.  "That's irrational of you.  And it's wicked of you that you let your daughter hurt people.  You're so irrational and wicked.  Even though you're a friend of Sifeng, we're not going to help you!"

"That's very rude of you, Miss!" says Brother Liu.  "Moreover, she didn't mean to hurt them!  Look!"  He points his finger at the design on her forehead, while he emits golden energy.  "Did you see it?"  He points to her forehead.  "This...This is the charm used to control Demon Spirits."  It glows a greenish blue.  "Someone is controlling these demon spirits!  They're forced to do evil and grow Jialuo blood fruits.  Yu'er, tell me.  Who forced you to do this?  I'll teach him a lesson!"

Yu'er looks around.  She hesitates.

"Say it," says Brother Liu.

Huge vibrations emanate from her head, and she covers her ears.

Brother Liu shrieks.  Yu'er sobs.

"I'm not going out," Yu'er sobs.  "Help me, please.  Help me, please."

"What's going on?" asks Brother Liu.

Yu'er vanishes.

"Someone has summoned her back," says Sifeng.

Xuanji inhales the air.  "I can still smell the aura of those demon spirits.  They're not far from here.  Let's go after them."

Xuanji makes a run for it, everyone else following behind.

Yu'er is waiting anxiously at a demon furnace located outside.  Three blood fruits are on a rock.  Ling Shi, the mastermind, is sending the fruits into the furnace, one by one.

"The Blood Fruits have all been used up," he says.  "Give me yours."

"There's some troublemakers in the forest.  They've ruined the blood vine.  Please have mercy on me, and give me some time," says Yu'er.

"What did you say?" Ling Shi asks sharply.  "Give you more time?  Who would give me mine?  If there's no blood fruit, I'll use you to cultivate my pill!"

 

The six disciples, plus Brother Liu are walking through the bamboo forest.  They are searching for Yu'er, and Xuanji is leading the way.

Xuanji immediately spots the towering, black, demon furnace, and a myriad of small fires.

Yu'er is down on her knees while Ling Shi is ready to punish her.  He uses a powerful stone in his hand to make her levitate.

"Let me go!" Yu'er shrieks.

Brother Liu immediately pushes through the disciples.  He is sick to his stomach watching his daughter be abused.

"Help!" screams Yu'er.  "Help!  Help!"

With the speed of lightning, Brother Liu flies through the air, knocking Ling Shi off his feet.  The two spar, resulting in Yu'er falling from the air.  Brother Liu runs over and immediately catches her.

Sifeng reinforces Brother Liu, and knocks Ling Shi over into a wall of stones.

The rest of the disciples enter the area.  Ling Shi looks straight at Linglong and Little Six.  "You..." says Ling Shi.

"It's Elder Ling Shi of Xuanyuan Sect," says Linglong.

"Don't you ruin my plan," Ling Shi snarls.  "My pill!  My pill!"

"As a Sect Elder," Lectures Little Six, "how could you control the demon spirits and kill the innocent?  You've gone astray!"

"It's too late," Ling Shi looks mournfully into the furnace.  "There's no Blood Fruit left!" He bursts into tears.

"He won't tell the truth because he's been bewitched by evil," says Sifeng. "We're juniors."

"There's none left," Ling Shi sobs.

"There's nothing we can do," Sifeng continues.  "Instead, we should let Elder Zhu Shi interrogate him."

"That's a very strong demonic aura," Xuanji observes.

A big blob of purple comes flying through the air.  Upon better view, it is a beautiful woman dressed in a purple hanfu.  She is wearing an aweome hairstyle of one bun on each side, shaped to look like fox ears.  All fires are extinguished as she descends, and the leaves blow out of her way.  She grabs Ling Shi and they fly up into the air.  She bombs the disciples with energy of purple haze.  The disciples move away to avoid the massive explosion.  The impact, however, doesn't prevent the disciples from being knocked over.  They roll away, and the fog of the Fox Demon permeates the area.

Xuanji looks at the plants beside her, and notices blood.  She sits up.

"Xuanji, are you all right?" asks Sifeng.

"Sifeng, you're bleeding," says Xuanji.  She reaches for his hideous mask.

He gently moves away.  "Just a small scratch.  Nothing serious."

"Sifeng!" exclaims Xuanji.

"It's nothing serious," Sifeng asserts.

Little Silver Flower kneels down beside them.  "Sifeng, why do you risk your life for her?"

"Lu Yan Ran," Sifeng warns, "stop talking nonsense."

"I'm worried about you!" Cries Little Silver Flower.  "Why do you risk your life for Chu Xuanji?"

"I..." interjects Xuanji.

"Little Six," cries Linglong, "don't scare me!"  He is lying on the ground, unconscious, and bleeding from the mouth.  "Or I'll tell Father on you!"

Xuanji and Sifeng run up to them.

"Wake up, Little Six!" Linglong shakes him.  "Don't scare me!"

Little Six starts to cough.  He opens his eyes, and Linglong helps him sit up.

"Minyan," says Linglong.  "You frightened me."

He looks at her.  "Linglong...were you crying for me?"

Linglong stands up.  "No," she wipes her tears and regains her composure.  "The wind made my eyes water."

"We feel the same way about each other," Little Six says impatiently.  "Why don't you just admit it?"

Linglong pauses.  "You must have injured your head."  She is not ready to be vulnerable. "That's why you mistook me for Xuanji."

Xuanji looks at Sifeng.  He lowers his head, grateful that his mask conceals his emotions.

"I, Zhong Minyan, only care about Chu Linglong.  I'm not apologizing.  You feel the same way about me.  Why don't you admit it?  We care about each other.  Can we stop lying to ourselves?"

Linglong looks at Xuanji.  She turns Little Six away from Xuanji and Sifeng.  "You confessed to my sister, and now you're doing this to me.  Are you making fun of us sisters?  If you let Xuanji down, I'll kill you."

The wheels in Sifeng's head are turning, as he entertains the notion that Xuanji's definition of liking someone may not necessarily mean the same as his.

Linglong walks away from Little Six before he can explain anything.

"Linglong!" Xuanji calls.

Little Six looks at Xuanji sternly.  "Xuanji, let's make things clear today.  I..."

"Minyan," Sifeng interjects.  "You should think before you say it."

"What do you mean?" Little Six asks.

"You've upset Xuanji," says Sifeng.  "If you don't care about Xuanji's feelings, I won't forgive you."  Sifeng then walks away, leaving Xuanji alone with Little Six.

Brother Liu is carefully picking debris out of Yu'er's hair.

"Eldest Brother Liu," says Sifeng.  "Are you all right?"

"Yu'er is all right," Brother Liu smiles.

Yu'er rolls her eyes.

"That's Xuanji," Brother Liu says to Sifeng.  He shakes his head.  "You're stubborn, indeed."

"Sifeng!" Xuanji runs up to them.  "Sifeng, why is everyone upset?"  Due to Xuanji's Six Senses being undeveloped, she has a penchant for missing important social cues.  "Why did Linglong fight with Sixth Senior again?"

"Ha!" says Brother Liu.  "You really live up to your name.  I've heard and seen it all.  They're upset because of you." 

"Eldest Brother Liu," Sifeng warns.

"I..." says Xuanji.

"This is an urgent situation," says Sifeng.  "Let's find Yu'er's charm stone first."

"That's right, old man," says Yu'er.  "Stop minding other people's business."

"Yes, yes, the charm stone," Brother Liu says, ignoring his daugther's contempt.  "It's an explosion.  Surely it'll still be in there."  He points to a pile of rocks.  "Let's go," he hisses at his daughter.

"Sifeng, I..." Xuanji starts.

He walks away before she can finish her sentence.  He's trying to keep his head clear before he gets tangled up in any drama.

Brother Liu, Linglong, Xuanji, Yu'er, and Sifeng enter the area of the explosion.  Sifeng looks under a pile of rubble, and finds a glittering blue rock.  The same one Ling Shi had used to try and harm Yu'er.

"Eldest Brother Liu," says Sifeng.  "This is it.  The charm stone that controlled the demon spirits."

Brother Liu runs up to Sifeng and grabs the stone, his eyes wide.  "Yes, this is it.  Break it, and Yu'er will be free."

"Wait," says Linglong.  "This demon spirit has hurt many.  We can't let her go just like this."

Brother Liu glares at her.

Little Six approaches them.  "A demon spirit was born a demon.  According to the rule of Five Sects, we can't just let her go."

An awkward silence descends on the group.

"Yu'er made the mistake because she was forced by Elder Ling Shi," Sifeng points out.  "Now that Ling Shi has run off, and the other demon spirits are dead.  There is no reason for us to kill Yu'er.  She's one of the victims, after all."

"Sifeng is right," Xuanji agrees.  "Demon spirits made up of the remaining spiritual power of demons.  They've died once.  If we kill them again, there's no way for them to turn good.  I don't see it as a righteous act."

Sifeng is impressed with her insight.

Linglong nods in agreement.
