Good Morning from Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA! I wanted to tell you a little bit about the Empress Ki anime fan art coloring book I have available on my website. I am a huge fan of the drama Empress Ki, and I really wanted to create a bunch of fan art (artwork done by The Bluedevil) and a coloring book to show my appreciation. Unfortunately, very few people in the US are aware of this show, which is unfortunate. I consider it one of the best dramas out there. Instead, when it comes to historical dramas, many people in the US aren't aware of many. Hwarang and Mr. Queen are ones I tend to hear about the most from people in the US. Those are good shows, but just as Panda Express caters to the American taste and flavor profile, the same can be applied to Hwarang and Mr. Queen. And just like with Chinese food that has been Americanized in order to get more business, there is actually so much more in the area that appeals to the culturally relevant flavor profile, as opposed to what appeals to the American flavor profile. The culturally relevant flavor profile, as opposed to the trendy American "I feel ethnic today" flavor profile is way more interesting to me, even if it often means I have to venture out of my comfort zone. I am also aware that "Empress Ki" is not historically accurate. Such as her cross dressing her as a man, which coincided with many period dramas at that time (I'm thinking Queen Seondeok) where we have a cross dressing female lead. So, I'm assuming that was a huge selling point on period dramas at that time. There are also a number of historical inaccuracies in the show that I'm aware of. What I like about it, however, is just like with La Malinche of the Aztec, you have feminist historians who are wanting to go a little deeper into the narrative. Is that catering to an American value? Not entirely, as the Three Kingdoms and 고려 dynasties had much more progressive attitudes towards women, which definitely changed during the 조선 dynasty.  So, it's very interesting to me to watch it all unfold.
