I had an amazing time with my Ohana visiting Honolulu, Hawaii. My daughter was graduating from Hawaii Pacific University, so even though we were going on a very low budget, we couldn't afford to cancel the trip. We had to see her graduate, and I'm glad we did. I've been to Hawaii about seven or eight times since 1992 (I've lost count), and this time we got to experience it differently (in a very good way) due to our low budget.
For one thing, we spent much more time on the beach, time walking around the neighborhood, and time experiencing Hawaii as locals by riding the bus! Let me just say, they have an amazing bus system. Here in Albuquerque, New Mexico, our bus system isn't all that great. Theirs' covers the entire island of Oahu, which means we can go just about anywhere we want to without spending close to thousands of dollars on a car rental. (In addition to those horrible parking fees).
While I didn't make the sales I wanted during Operation Honolulu 한복 hustle, I did become much better at being proactive in promoting my clothes, not feeling I had imposter syndrome, and not feeling like I was committing an act of cultural appropriation. I got a very positive response from many Korean women and men! Someone even thought I was part of a dance troupe!
At my insistence, we went to several different thrift stores, where we found a lot of neat stuff!
And here's my daughter in her graduation clothes!
